Rory MacLeod is a bold and powerful Highland Chief with only one allegiance-to his clan. He vows revenge against the rival MacDonald clan, though duty demands a handfast marriage to Isabel MacDonald-a bride he does not want and has no intention of keeping. But Rory couldn't have anticipated the captivating woman who challenges his steely control and unleashes the untamed passion simmering beneath his fierce exterior. Blessed with incomparable beauty, Isabel MacDonald is prepared to use every means possible-including seduction-to uncover her husband's most guarded secrets. Instead Rory awakens Isabel's deepest desires and her sweetest fantasies. Now Isabel has found the happiness she's always dreamed of with the very man she must betray, and discovers that passion can be far more dangerous than revenge.

"In her irresistible debut McCarty gives life to the exciting and colorful times of Highland feuds. . . . McCarty is destined to win fans who will wait with bated breath for the next book in the series." (Romantic Times)
"Oh no! Same narrator! Never buy 2 books at once!!!"
A different narrator would have earned the novel a 3 star, anyway.
The narration is intolerable.
Halting. No regard for punctuation or normal sentence cadence and intonation.
Disappointment. I purchased several in the series at one time. NEVER will I buy more than one book at a time in a series. I wasted so much money on this narrator. Frustration. Anger. Completely distracted from the story.
At this point, I am keeping a file of narrator's names to avoid on my computer and keeping that file open when purchasing a book. Lesson learned.
"VT. FAN"
I WOULD RECOMMEND ALL OF MCCARTY'S BOOKS AND AUDIOBOOKS. SIMPLY BECAUSE OF YOU ARE A FAN OF HISTORICAL, SCOTTISH HIGHLAND ROMANCE'S MCCARTY IS ONE OF THE BEST. ANTONY FERGUSON DOES AND EXCELLENT JOB AS NARRATOR.
MCCARTY'S HIGHLAND GUARD SERIES OF WHICH ONLY TWO ARE OUT IN AUDIO "THE CHIEF" AND "THE HAWK". I AM ANXIOUSLY WAITING FOR THE REST TO COME OUT IN AUDIO.
I NORMALLY DO PREFER A FEMALE NARRATOR WHO CAN DO BOTH MALE AND FEMALE VOICES (SUCH AS DAVINA PORTER, GERALDINE JAMES, HILLARY HUBER (THE BEST) AND ANGELA DAWE. ANTONY FERGUSON'S FOR A MALE NARRATOR IS GREAT. HE CAN PULL OF THE VOICES QUITE WELL.
ALL OF IT.
IF YOU LIKE THIS SERIES TRY HER "HIGHLAND GUARD SERIES" IT IS GREAT!!!!!!
"not sure"
I don't know... Maybe not. I'm not too into the book.
I'm going to find another Author
Goodness, this book moves so slow. Once again, here's another book of a weak heroine. It is said in the book several times that she isn't a timid woman but it seems to me that the Author doesn't know what she's talking about because this heroine is not just timid but spineless! I kept waiting for her to finally step up and show some real emotions, some anger and back bone BUT nothing! Seriously, I know that back in the old days, maybe women are a little on the "MEN RULES" side but come on! It's a BOOK! Give the heroine a little more back bone!! A little more pride!! Anyway, I was hoping to like this book so I can finish the trilogy but after reading this ridiculous first book, I can no longer go on. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE STOP WRITING A HEROINE WHO DOES NOTHING BUT CAUSE TROUBLE WHERE EVER SHE GOES!
"Love Antony Ferguson voice!!!!"
it is so hard to rank any of the audiobooks...they are all so wonderful..if they were not, i would not listen to them!!!
I would compare the book and the narrator to the Karen Marie Moning "highlander"series...Though Monica McCarty's highlanders do not time travel...both are a wonder read and the narrators rocks!
Every time little Isobel stands up to Rory
Yes it made me both laugh and cry...great job to the author and the narrator for bringing the characters to life...
Antony did a fabulous job narrating this and the other books...love the highlander voice...made my heart beat a little faster...Watch out Phil (narrator for Karen Maire Moning "Highlander" series)...lol!
I love to listen to audiobooks. It is great when the narrators get into the story and really bring the characters to life.
"Great Book!!!!! Loved it!!!"
This is a very interesting and entertaining story. I love Highland romances, if you do too then you will love this book!
"Great Story"
Another wonderful highland tale by Monica. The narrator was really go and easy to listen too. I really enjoy the highland history from the author at the end of the book.
"Good Story"
A little too many, and enduring sex scenes in my opinion, but it had a good story line, which included: Clan feuds, King interference, Scottish hand-fast marriages, treacheries, etc.
It was well narrated by Antony Ferguson, although at times he forgot the Scottish brogue...the reason for only 4 Stars. He has a voice that is easy to listen to, and gave a good performance over-all.
It was worth the sale price, but don't know about spending a credit for it???
"I was so disappointed"
Never will I try another of Monica McCarty's books. I was looking forward to a great story of romance, mystery, with a peppering of history. I was expecting to loose myself in a bygone era. What I got was nothing less than pornography. I am not a prude by any stretch, however; when the physical descriptions of the individuals and the states of physical anatomical discomfort and or desire is so often repeated, emphasized, and then regurgitated it completely negates the story. I shall not finish this book. The first hour was so just plain BAD
I really like this genre. I have found much better story tellers
He was fine. He just had nothing to work with.
Not a single one.
"Don't waste your money--even on sale"
No. The story is boring beyond belief. Only the halfway decent narration saves it a little. I tolerated 3 hours and had to give it up.
Construct a plot.
Maybe
A story, character development
"Was he eating while he read?"
The staccato style of this narrator was very irritating. I wish I could listen to more of these books, but I can't listen to more of his machine-gun style of delivery.
