RITA Award finalist Karen Witemeyer pens heartwarming historical romances that lift the spirit and the soul. Short-Straw Bride finds Meredith Hayes struggling to let go of her childhood crush on Travis Archer - the strapping young lad who saved her as a little girl. With a sensible proposal from the eligible Roy Mitchell on the table, it’s time for her to move on. But when Meredith overhears a plot to drive Travis and his brothers off their coveted land, she has no choice but to intervene.

I love books! All kinds... classics, mysteries, Christian fiction, suspense and action! I'm also a sucker for anything romantic. ;) And just recently started getting into some non-fiction, philosophical books.
"Another Winner!"
I love how it kept up the suspense and action as well as the love story. The multiple side characters were developed as well as the 2 main ones, and I'm all about characters in a story. Nobody was left out. There's just so much to consider in this book. I really enjoyed it a lot.
Karen Witemeyer's other books are probably the best comparisons. This one was great, and probably ties with my favorite "To Win Her Heart."
Well, other than the main 2, I really enjoyed Crockett. His character in the book just shone, and when he would say something, you knew it was him before they said it was. I think the narrator totally captured his character's mischievous sparkle.
Yes, and I mostly did too. I listened to it in about 2 or 3 sittings, all within a 24 hour period of time. I'd been waiting for it to become available, and I just couldn't make myself wait till my next road trip.
As a Christian historical fiction romance, this book was exceptional. Karen Witemeyer has become one of my new favorite Christian authors, writing romances between two godly Christians in mature, realistic, and godly relationships. I hate when characters in a book "missionary date," and Karen Witemeyer, for me, has tapped into a new way of writing Christian romance. It gets us out of the rut of thinking that we have to get the one we love saved before we can marry them... and into the "radical" thinking of not falling for anyone who doesn't love Christ. Her books don't rely on the need for conflict between the characters (there is that, but it's not the main conflict in the books), and adds a full story, background, intelligent and creative side characters, and action happening around the main characters that moves the story along at a sometimes exciting and sometimes easy pace. I am really enjoying her books, and though I know this one was just released, I eagerly await her next, whenever that might be.
creative and artistic
"Enjoyable and Sweet Romance"
It's on the upper end.
The author did a great job with the main characters AND the supporting "cast"-- since family was an important element of the story, the family members of both sides helped to develop the story.
The narrator did a fine job in differentiating the characters with the use of her voice.
I enjoyed the story and felt that the "religious" part supported and enhanced the story. I didn't feel like I was being preached to, through the story. It was very enjoyable listen.
I'm already looking for more by Karen Witemeyer. That's always a good sign. :)
"wonderful read!"
Absolutely! I simply fell in love with the characters. The narrator did a great job with the voices.
The character development. While the plot was predictable at times, I still found myself holding my breath to see if it would turn out alright.
"1 Bride-4 Brothers?!"
This is a different take on 7 Brides for 7 Brothers and I loved the completely opposite turn around in characters. Though similarities were there, with the head brother in charge (you always need a leader) and a head-strong damsel in distress, here goes the ride and I thought a FUN one at that. Wit, charm, adventure, family strife and deceit, with town trouble thrown in too.
I also felt the narrated was able to capture each of the characters in her delivery without much effort and she must have enjoyed the story as much as I did or she would not have delivered such a wonderful performance.
So don't go for the usual murder mystery or the typical romance novel with all of the twists and turns with sex and blood involved. Instead go for the twists and turns in the "Short-Straw Bride" and appreciate a more clean type of scenario instead, but full of everything you could possibly want, or need to keep you occupied and wanting more in any novel you can't seem to put down!!!
Trust me...You'll be glad you did. :)
I have always loved to read...but I often find it hard to find the time to sit down with a book. I started listening to audio books not too long ago, and I am hooked! It is hard to limit my listening to just during my comute to and from work! It has become a guilty pleasure of mine! I love just about every type of book, however I am a hopeless romantic to the core! :)
"NO "SHORT-STRAW" STORY!"
It is in my top five! This is the third Karen Witemeyer story I listened to...and I love her writing! This is my favorite from her thus far!
I would say Travis, because I loved how much of a gentleman he was! He is so honorable in so many ways...wish there was such a man in real life! You get the impression throughout the story that he feels that he doesn't add up or that he doesn't deserve anything considering past events...but that was never the case in my mind. All he ever does all through the book always is for the good of others, never putting himself first. Great character!
Haven't heard her before...but I thought she did a great job! She definitely portrayed the emotion that was there throughout the book, which I honestly haven't heard much of from other books I have listened to. It really made you feel as if you were there! She wasn't just reading the words, she acts them out too! She also did very well between all the different characters! I would listen to more from her for sure!
Lots of funny parts! Definitely laughed out loud!
The storyline was so great and hooked me right away!
I am a business owner, and an avid book reader. Because I don't have time to sit down with a book like I used to do, Audible has been a blessing! I listen when I travel, when I'm working, or just trying to relax. It's a great experience.
"A Must Read! Karen Witemeyer is an amazing author."
Absolutely! Pilar Witherspoon is a fabulous reader. She makes the story come alive.
There were a lot of "great" moments, but I loved the part where Meredith finds the Archer brothers drawing straws to see who would marry her.
"cute sassy characture good story"
witemeyer has brought another daring sassy woman to the rescue (i love her storys)
great story& winning caracters all the elements of a classic with the humor mix only Karen can provide as always short straw bride has a good conflict and blend of humor and drama that makes the story intertaining the proformer helps it along i recomend
"Predictable and boring"
No it was a waste of time to listen too. However, the story line was good but the way the main characters were perceived made it difficult to connect with them.
None because the beauty Meredith who is set as the main character was annoying and I found a few discrepancies.
The reader needs to work on reading the book with more emotion. Her reading was unfeeling but mostly in the beginning.
I only bought this novel because it received really high ratings and I'm perplexed as to why.
"To Stupid to Live"
NO
Made the heroine an interesting and real person. She was either ridiculously timid or out of her mind stupid. She was as flat as a pancake. It is books like this that give inspirational romance a bad name.
slow, bland, and uninteresting
All of the last third.
Woman can be religious and still be a smart and strong person, but apparently not in this book.
"Just okay"
I was disappointed with this book. It had religious undertones and I thought it was a little repetative.
