"Nick of Time amazed me, dazzled me, and swept my imagination off to sea....I've been craving an adventure story with a good mystery and this arrived in the nick of time to rescue me." (Diane Chen, School Library Journal)
"It's like the good guys always win!!"
I'm 34 years old, and was wanting an adventure. This was IT! I wished it could go on forever.
"Great adventure book for adults too!"
This book was recommended to me by my boss. His 10 year old loved it, so he listened to it and told me about it. Great book! I've read other time traveler books but this one was almost like a Clive Cussler underwater adventure with two plot lines intersecting at the very end. The narrator does a good job with German and British accents and even the little girl's character. I would recommend this to anyone who likes a fun, adventurous, and well-written story. It makes me want to read the author's other adult-adventure books. Enjoy!
"A frolicking good time"
I'm a big fan of Ted Bell's Alex Hawke stories, so I had high expectations from this book, and I wasn't disappointed. The genre is very different from the Alex Hawke books, but the high excitement and excellent character development made this a joy to listen to. I love the way Ted integrated a fantasy pirate adventure with a time travel story, and grounded it all with historically significant characters. It was like Pirates of the Caribbean meets The Hunt For Red October. This is one I will definitely listen to again.
"Excellent for kids and adults."
This is a great book for all ages. My ten year old was thoroughly gripped by the story and the historicl insights, and my younger kids were completely absorbed by it all. Finally, a great adventure story for kids that doesn't rely on the ugly supernatural to capture their interest.
"Fast Paced - Exciting"
I am a 55 year-young woman who loved this book. This is the first listen/read for me by this author and I was not disappointed. The story started like a movie which grips you from the first scene. I recommend this book with much enthusiasm.
"If you don't read this book you are missing out!"
My 10 year old son read this book and couldn't put it down. He raved about it so much that I was compelled to read it, as I do most of his books. I must say that this is the best book I have read in a long time. I am so impressed with it that I have recommended it already to a dozen people. I just wish there were more books like this. I believe this book redefines what a book can be. If you haven't read this book you are really missing out. By the way, the narator for this book was also the best I have heard, amazing!
"A Great Adventure"
The characters are well developed. The heroes in Nick of Time are great, they are not perfected, each character has their own personal problems to over come.
Hobbs is my favorite character, He is a Weapons Exported for the British Royal NAVY. What I like best about him is that he has a soft spot for Kate, throughout there part of the adventure he takes care of her. Playing mind games with the Germans, well trying to get information to Churchill about the movements of the German U-boats.
This is a great Adventure story for children, it is a modern Treasure Island story for this generation. If you like books like the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling or Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan this book is for you.
"Couldn't finish it..."
Based on all of the 5-star reviews I expect a lot of disagreement towards my review, but I'm sorry, I couldn't finish this story. I'll qualify that by admitting that I'm a 40-year old with a 12 year old of my own and I tried to listen to this book on my own. I realize that it's written for the younger audience but most of the reviews where from adults so I took a leap of faith. I took issue with some of the basics that seemed to be missing. For example, what parent would let their 12 and 7 year olds go sailing through a dangerous reef at all hours of the day and night in deadly weather with Nazis looming along the shoreline? And if Nick was so responsible why would he spend hours on the sea without food or water? Those are just some of the things I couldn't look past. There are plenty of examples of young adult books that cross age barriers successfully such as Harry Potter and more recently Michael Vey. I had hoped it would be a rollicking adventure the whole family could enjoy but I didn't make it past chapter 15. Sorry.
"This is a 10 star book"
I loved this story and can't wait to read the next installment. Ted Bell is a fantastic writer. This may be a kids story, it certainly brought out the kid in me. I found myself identifying with every character in the book one way or another. I gave it to my 19 year old daughter and she is loving it too. Three cheers for Ted Bell. The narration is also world class, I find John Shea one of the best. He bought each character to life.
"Fantastic for a child (or child at heart)"
This is a great book for those who like a great story with a healthy dose of suspense, and don't need blood, guts or gore. I am going to let my kids listen to this one as they enjoy a great story as much as me.
