When linguist Andrew Dennison is yanked from his bed by the Secret Service and taken to a top secret facility in the desert, he has no idea he’s been brought there to translate the words of an ancient demon.
He joins pretty but cold veterinarian Sun Jones, eccentric molecular biologist Dr. Frank Belgium, and a hodge-podge of religious, military, and science personnel to try and figure out if the creature is, indeed, Satan.
But things quickly go bad, and very soon Andy isn’t just fighting for his life, but the lives of everyone on earth.

"what a trip"
There were so many points at which this book could have gone horribly, crashingly wrong. To my amazement, it never did, and I enjoyed the hell out of it. Literature for the ages, this is not. But it's ontologically whacked, it's crazy fun, it's bite-your-nails exciting! And Luke Daniels does a fine job with the narration. Definitely recommended to take the edge off the the pain of the current political primaries.

"Awesome!"
Its up there. The story was creepy and twisted all the way through. Just how I like them.
Picturing "Bub" speaking for the first time would give me the chills.
Did a really good job with different characters. I was never confused about who was speaking.
Hang on to your shorts... and bring an extra pair!
This story was fast paced and kept me listening all throughout. Looking into the different characters' past was quick and insightful without taking you away from the story. Author and narrator had me freaked on what was coming next. Putting myself in the same situation as the main character I could see the same reactions. I would highly recommend. I didn't know what to expect and was delivered a gem.
"A Pleasant Surprise!"
I purchased this Audible Book on a whim. I was checking out, and noticed the title, and scanned the summary, and since it was fairly short, and inexpensive, I added it to my cart. I sure am glad that I did so.
The storyline is imaginative, although it stretches the imagination a wee bit, but what I really found enjoyable was the characters, all of them.
I would recommend this quick listen to anyone who has a tendency to enjoy rather quirky, out of the ordinary Audible Books.
I don't really want to give anything else away, or it wouldn't be a suprise!
"Monster of a tale! Great listen / read."
Not sure - I've only listened to the audio version - but it definitely made some of the sounds and ambiance stand out.
The story itself was terrific. J.A. Konrath I wonder must be a freaking genius! This book is labeled as a techno-thriller. Not sure exactly what that is per se, but the level of information about DNA strands and nuclear fusion, etc. literally was impressive. Blew me away. No pun intended.
Bub's voice scared the crap out of me.
80 years ago it was found buried nearly 200 feet below the Mayan soil deeply submersed inset a deep coma...
...Until today.
Just a really great story. Some of the twists were just so impressive that I had no idea what I was in for. The ending I was perhaps a little disappointed with. I would have liked to have had more closer, but still that did not detract much from anything. The character of
"Exciting...creepy...gory...I loved it!"
All the characters were equally great...however Bub had some of the best lines.
Yes, and he is one of my favorite narrators. In fact, the main reason I tried this book is because of him. I had never heard of the author.
Yes, but not in a nice way. When the baby attacked I thought the woman got what she deserved. She was totally bonkers.
This book was so extra creepy and gory. Not for the faint of heart. That said, sometimes I just need to listen to something like this and it fit the bill exactly.
for 5 years has driven 180 miles round trip daily. That is a ton of listening time!
"a fun ride"
twists and turns leaves you wanting more information on what is going on right from the start.
When you think you know, but you don't know.. that makes a good book. Konrath continues to deliver for me.
passion and flair.
This book kept me in my car during breaks and lunches! Could not get enough
"You either love Konrath or you don't"
I have never been a Sci-Fi fan but I love J. A. Konrath's Jack Danial series so I thought I would give some of Konrath's other works a try. I was hooked on the first chapter! I was surprised the book has a lot of depth to it and I enjoyed getting to know the characters. Luke Daniels does a fantastic job narrating, especially on Bub!
If you don't know of Konrath, his books are not for the squeamish lots of gore for some people! I'm funny, I can read about gore but can't see it.
This book has to continue because I'm looking forward to # 2!!!!!
"Absolutely Horrifying"
Bone chilling horror story that could give nightmares to the squeamish. I dare you to put yourself in the shoes of those that are trapped in this situation.
Andy, Sun and Frank are the heroes. But I think Bud was the most interesting.Bud was able to make my goose bumps run and hide .
This is the first time hearing a performance by Luke but he did an exceptional job.
Although I did not cry for any of the characters, I could sure feel their fear.
This book is what a " true horror" story should be. Edge of your seat mind numbing terror.
""Bub" rules!"
Interesting: Bub, the prinicipal character.
Less interesting: The sometimes gratuitous gore
I have listened to his performances, and am always impressed . His rendering of "Bub" is one of the all time best on Audible, IMHO.
It did grab me, and was definitely a " pause in the day and pay attention" type audio book.
The final resolution is somewhat of a let down, but it does leave promises of more to come !
"took a rewarding risk"
the narration was amazing, and surprisingly the story was refresingly original!
