Publisher's Summary

In 1969, a Navy SEAL, a trained assassin on a confidential mission, is dropped off in the Vietnam jungle. Days later, a U.S. gunboat returns to pick him up, but the boat's young captain panics under fire and leaves the SEAL behind.

Twenty years later, that young captain is now a Pentagon admiral as the SEAL returns to Washington, D.C. with his own career change: he's become a sweeper - a clandestine cleaner of secret messes. And he's come back to claim "some things of value" - things the admiral can't afford to lose.

Navy Commander Karen Lawrence - sharp, smart, and savvy - is assigned to investigate the bad things that start happening to the admiral. She finds herself caught between one man's boundless ambition and another's relentless quest for revenge.

What the Critics Say

"Deutermann's inside knowledge of the Navy and Pentagon politics, coupled with his likable protagonists, make this a gripping new addition to his line of naval mysteries." (Publishers Weekly)

    "Wow! What a beginning"

I don't know why more people aren't buying this author's books, because they are just great. The reader is also first rate.

I am a life long Geek, Musician, and Writer ... and Audible just makes reading that much better because now I can "read" even when I might have time, but not the option, like driving and things like that.

    "Amazing Story, Very Gripping"

This book reaches out and grabs you by the throat and holds you there until you finish it, very well done. I also love how he works in "historical" pieces as well, it's so believable it's crazy. Very intense, very entertaining, and most of all a very good story!

"Bit stupid, but still a good read"

I found this earlier book less taut than the others I've listened to, but I did like the characters and the story. Some of them were kinda stupid, especially some of the actions and reactions of the female Navy lawyer, but it didn't spoil it for me.

    "I could not stop listening"

I didn't rate it 5 stars only because I save that rating for books written by authors I experience as extraordinary (Pat Conroy and Bryce Courtnay for example), but Deutermann's books are really really good entertainment. And I like Dick Hill.

"silly plot, no twists, no surprises"

In reading the other review of this book, I can only say "to each their own." I found this book to be more than a little ridiculous. The admiral instantly knows that his stalker is: a one-eyed, one-handed "ninja" SEAL from his distant past...and, by golly, that's exactly who it is...and they still can't find him. No twists, no surprises, just silly macho action that has a few fun points but no real drama. The character development left me not really caring about anyone. The female lead is "strong" just when she "needs" to be to prove the author is a liberated type. In reality, the female lead does stupid things and only by miracle doesn't end up dead as the result. The baddies are over the top. Oh well, maybe I've listened to worse, but this one was no great shakes.
