TORMENT: A Novel of Dark Horror

torment is like a really good episode of the twilight zone. it keeps you guessing what the h-e-double hockey sticks is really going on.

the story starts out with mia's fiance being captured and forced into confessing he's an assassin. mia finagles her way in to a meeting with the potus (president of the united states) by writing her niece’s essay on why the medal of honor is so important. she wants to confront potus and find out what really happened to her fiancé, who is mia (missing in action) and been declared a traitor. before mia can confront potus at brunch, all the power goes out. the secret service realize an emp has knocked out all electronics. if that's not bad enough, when the white house's backup comes up, there's a warning that there are inbound nuclear missiles. so, the secret service rushes mi, potus, and the others from the medal of honor ceremony to a secret subterranean railway. they are zoomed to a secret survival area where there are 4 rockets to take survivors into space to escape a nuclear war. each rocket is outfitted with food, supplies, and dna samples kind of like a 21st century noah's ark.

while in space, the survivors witness the changes of an all out nuclear war between the u.s. and russia. the rockets are state of the art, and the survivors prepare themselves to live in space while the earth heals.

however as the survivors begin to wrap their heads around what has just befallen them and the earth, the rocket's computer states that it is preparing to land. they think it's a mistake until they peer out and see that the earth amazingly looks normal.

the rocket lands a few blocks away from another rocket that survived takeoff. as they are landing, they hear a transmission from the other rocket's survivors. they are greeted by seemingly normal people. however, all they hear is, "i'm so sorry," followed by the screams of the survivors from the other rocket.

what follows is a bunch of running, fleeing, hiding, fighting, killing, and dying. the survivors think the nuclear war has driven the town's inhabitants crazy until mia notices a man come back to life afer being killed by a mob.

i won't give away any more, you'll just have to listen to it yourself. i'm a zombie fan, and i enjoyed this audiobook. it's got a lot of action and gore with some interesting characters. it's freaky and creepy.

it's a mix of lost and the twilight zone with zombies thrown in. the story kind of starts off slow, so stick with it.

i've got a question for you. "are you ready?" you'll get it after you listen. oh...by the way...CRAZY ending. you won't see it coming!

Out of all the audiobooks I've listened to throughout my life, it's hard to rank it among Cormac McCarthy, Stephen King and the like - but I have to say that despite all of the negative feedback this audiobook has gotten (which, I admit, made me think twice about getting it) - I definitely rank it among those I'd listen to more than once... happily. Being a fan of both Bishop (Jeremy Robinson) and narrator RC Bray ultimately won out over the naysayers.

If you're looking for an awe-inspiring life-changer, this isn't it. It's an adventure with a really freaky take on the undead (I'm sooorrrry!!!) that proves to be highly entertaining and totally worth while. I definitely recommend it!!!

The undead/zombies. In most movies today they're portrayed as ravenous spider monkeys who come standard with parkour in their blood (not knocking it - totally love it!!) but what they have in Torment (without giving too much away) is a very unique twist.

Also the journey from the beginning to the end. That's not me saying I "like the whole thing" - I'm just saying that from where it starts out to where it ends up is a great twist!

A couple come to mind (the McMansion at the beginning, finding the other crewman in the forest) but definitely the ones with Liz (the little girl) - very well written! (and hysterical to say the least!)

Jeremy Bishop (aka Jeremy Robinson) seems to put out a book every other day and, having read a bunch of them, I can't help but be amazed at how thorough he is with each. Nothing is sacrificed in his expediency. The storyline, the characters.... all fleshed out and solid. Outstanding work, Jeremy!

Also, I've now listened to several audiobooks narrated by R.C. Bray and I have to say that he is definitely becoming one of my favorite narrators. He has a very approachable and personable manner of narrating and makes some very interesting character voice choices that really enhance the story.

The story if flacky and weird. Half of the story makes no sense while the other half is boring causing me to roll my eyes in disbelief. The story is novel in its own special way but I will take a predictable Zombie novel over a novel that sounds like a 12 year old came up with. Spaceships, ex-hippie monster, insane preacher, worm like human creature that eats leaves and poops them out, and Zombies that don't want to be Zombies. Yeah just save your credit.

This book at first - I was very skeptical - space and stuff.... but the rest of the story WOW - Im not going to be a spoiler - not a Romero Zombie book, but def worth a listen - Good book!!

YES! I am listening to it again right now. This is a great story and I think it takes at least two listens to make sure you get it all.

I have not found another book like this, but wish their were more. I have listened to almost all of the zombie books on audible and this one is completely different from them all.

These are the scariest zombies I have read/listed to. Most zombies are mindless, slow moving people that generally only get you with overpowering numbers. These are different...and harder to deal with.

He does a great job of changing his voice to match the different characters.

Yes. I stayed up late listening one night until 2:00 just so I could find out what happened at the end. Then when it was finished I couldn't sleep because I was thinking about the ending.

It would have been better for me if the story line was stronger. Off to a great start, then I lost interest.

Keep the story line at a more active level. It doesn't work for me when it opens with a "bang" then peters out to mundane details.

It's got a GREAT ending, there are some hugely unrealistic plot points at the beginning.

It's a book I would recommend and look forward to more.

I could not finish this one maybe the second half was better. Maybe it was geared for a teenage audience.
