Heaven's Wager: The Heaven Trilogy, Book 1

Enjoyed this book. Dekker is a Christian, so if you're offended by Christian themes, you will not like this book. I enjoy most of Dekker's writing. This story held my interest and consequently I've decided to buy more in this series.

This book was so well written, I felt like I was actually a character in the book. I could feel the emotions that the characters were going through, even so much as to keep me awake from the adrenaline! When Kent Anthony was wronged, I felt like I had been wronged too. I've never had that experience with a book before. I will definitely be downloading the other books in this series!

Oh brother Dekker..oh precious Ted Dekker...I typed a few days ago, looking for authors like Frank Peretti..and Google via God spews out Ted Dekker...the rush of the story..the linking of Spirit and ink and oh the story of Elohim's grace and power,loss and return, pain and healing.
A man will see and learn,will grow...More grace brother Dekker,to tell the story of Jesus with so much fire, clarity, intensity and power...I am buying any and everything you ever wrote Ted Dekker.God bless you.

Not my usual download, but this book was surprisingly good.. It was well written and well narrated.. It kept me guessing till the end which is hard for someone who plows thru as many books as I do..

I especially enjoyed the ending and how it became personal to every listener.

It was real with a large dose of hope.

Not sure. I enjoyed his telling of the story. He did a great job staying in character.

Every Man Is a Job

I have loved reading books by Ted Dekker. I did not find this one as well written as some of his other books. I thought his word choice and expressions were a bit cheesy at times and some of the drama was a bit drawn out and not necessary for the story line.

After all the hype the other reviewers gave this book, especially letting followers of Jesus know how much this would mean, I was really excited to buy this and hear it. The sample I heard already had me asking questions, thinking this might be in the style of "Grandmother and The Priests" by Taylor Caldwell -- one of my favorite books ever written.

Boy howdy, was I ever disappointed!!

The reader was excellent!! I could tell just by his voice which character was speaking, which I've discovered is a rare talent and one I treasure in listening to books.

The intricate revenge plot was excellently devised.

It was the rest of the book that I had trouble with. The mother-in-law/grandmother drove me crazy trying to understand what she was up to and I don't give any credence to that happening in life. What she said towards the end of this disappointing book could have been written on one page: "Job," because it's just a twist on the book of Job. A very long and boring twist on the book of Job.

Maybe you'll agree with the other reviewers and really like this. As I said, the revenge plot, something everyone has dreamed of at least once in their lives, was excellent and the reader's vocals of the different characters was most excellent!! Take a chance if you want to, but I'm avoiding Ted Dekker's novels after this awful encounter.

Do things like the old testament trials of Job still happen today? The core premise of the book is, yes, they do. I love the characters, especially the Grandma. The plot is interesting and fresh. But the most impressive quality of this book is the focus on the spiritual nature of the struggles of the protagonist.

If you are a believing Christian, you will love this book.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book including the performace of the reader.
Ted Dekker weaves a great story and I am looking forward to the second in this triolgy

Is this the same Dekker who wrote "Adam"? He's obviously matured somewhat if a comparison of the two books is anything to go by, since this was written almost ten years earlier. I bought it because I enjoyed "Adam" and wanted to try more by the same author. The book has some good reviews. Has it been applauded by Christians out of a sense of duty? I feel as if I've skirted the fringes of lunacy for 16 hours.

I find almost nothing likeable about the main characters. The hero, Kent, is a highly intelligent man who becomes mentally unhinged and starts acting like a moron. The other main character, his mother-in-law, is depicted as a warm and caring old lady. Actually, I find her pushy, self-righteous, hammerhead preachy, and almost abusive in the way she lords it over others. She has visions of heaven, where they seemingly spend their time in continuous histrionic laughter. Well anyway, that’s all she tells us about it. Sounds scary. But we should strive for it.

The rest is preachy ad nauseum, with the single expletive of “Goodness!” repetitively thrown in at every turn. I waver between irritation and annoyance. Its one of the worst books I’ve listened to. I feel robbed! I think the only "goodness" out of this would be to gather all copies and send them for recycling.

The sole redeeming factor is the excellent narration.

A hook early in the book to give the readers/listener a reason to keep going.

Narrator's acting was good and voices were easy to listen to.

Anger. I kept waiting for something interesting to happen but I couldn't even get to Part 2.
