"The Book of God: The Bible as Novel (Unabridged)"
I enjoyed every chapter in this book. It made the stories and the people much more alive and real. I have a different impression of Simon Peter,Mary Magdaline, the time of Abraham and even Judas. I find myself remembering parts that I never would think of before and pick up the Bible to re-read different chapters and verses with a new understanding. Just reading the Bible never brought me back for clarification, but this book brought me back to the Bible.
"Don't let the voice throw you. Awesome book!"
This man has made me cry tears of joy and wonder. The voice of the guy that reads it grates on you at first, but he is able to be many voices through the course of the book, and becomes very intimate and convincing. Hang in for a while and at the end of this very long book, all you can do is eagerly look forward to the other one on the life of Paul. Its not just me saying this. Several friends to whom I have recommended the audiobook say the same thing. If you have never read a chronological Bible, this is going to be a special treat for you. Enjoy!
"Absolutely Wonderful"
I loved listening to this book. It made the characters from the Old and New Testaments come alive. Wangerin is a fantastic storyteller, and he manages to weave together the many lives and events that make up the Bible into a wonderful narrative. I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting to understand the overall story of the Bible.
"Avoid audiobooks narrated by author!!"
The book content is actually pretty good - basically a novelization of Scripture with coverations between biblical figures extrapolated from the facts. I think this book helps to understand the linear flow of scripture.
HOWEVER, the narration often made me cringe! The dramatic tone was often frustrating - the pitch and volume of the narration often rose and fell in an unnatural pattern. I think I would love this book with a different (trained) narrator.
Personally, I have not had positive experiences with audiobooks narrated by the author. I actually did not realize that the author was narrating, but was so frustrated by the narration, that I decided to check and. . . sure enough - the author was narrating. For me, it just means I need to watch for this and read reviews before I purchase!
"The Bible in Living Color - Inspired"
As a Christian for 20 years, I still find the Bible a daunting read. While I size up a front-to-back read of the real (Audible-version) thing, I have found this to be a superb primer. The book is true to the Word and full of 'living color portraits' of most of the essential characters. It inspired my faith, and it lifted my perception and appreciation of each person, from Abraham to David to Jesus, particularly Jesus. Anyone who is seeking the heart of Christianity will find it in this book. And when you're done, you have to read PAUL, Walter Wangerin Jr.'s other 5-star book. Both superb!
"Not the Bible... but"
This won't substitute for your Bible, but it sure will bring the Bible to life! It's true the author has used some literary license to fill in some blanks, but he clothes the Biblical characters in flesh and blood! And the narrator is EXCELLENT. I was brought to tears many times and I rejoiced for a new appreciation of "God's Book."
"The Whole Good News - Alive!"
I got The Book of God as a gift on cassette many years ago. It totally changed my perspective on The WHOLE story of the bible - especially the old testement. Wangerian's story telling ability brings the characters to life. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll be changed.... Now that I have it digitally, it's poratble in the 21st century.
"great book"
as a pastor, this book refreshingly takes familiar stories and gives them a whole new perspective. a couple places he took some liberty like with song of solomon being a crush of Tamar on Solomon. Overall it has really made the Bible come to life, highly recommended and well researched.
"Great book"
This book really brings to life some familiar bibilical stories in a new way. If the King James Version is difficult to understand, this book simplifies the essential stories. It is an outstanding companion to God's Word!
"Great Narrative"
Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book, start to finish. While not a replacement for Bible study, it is easy to follow, thoroughly entertaining, and brings to life the Bible stories. Definitely worth the time. My 80 year old mother heard some of it and said, "that's really in the Bible?"
