Publisher's Summary

The Triffids are a monstrous species of stinging plant; they walk, they talk, they dominate the world. The narrator of this novel wakes up in hospital to find that, by missing the end of the world as he knew it, he has survived to witness a new one. But the new world that awaits him is fantastic, horrific - and entirely plausible.

    Story
"I was thoroughly entertained from beginning to end"
What did you love best about The Day Of The Triffids?

This story was like putting on a special pair of lenses which showed you the world you currently live in, after humanity implodes on itself.

Through this story you also view yourself differently - how capable and resilient are you when it's important? And when significant pressure is applied what kind of human being would you be?

Curiously, although written in the 50's, Wyndham has told a story which really hasn't aged, in fact it seems potently relevant for recent times. Our collective ingenuity has a seedy underbelly which could adversely affect our very existence if not managed correctly.

What did you like best about this story?

Wyndham grabbed me from the get-go and I was in this story, alongside Bill, all the way.

What does Samuel West bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

What a fabulous voice! I can't imagine Bill sounding any other way. I was 100% satisfied with his intonation/pace/sound. Loved listening to him.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    Who will survive.. and how???

    Any additional comments?

This story has a place in my personal top 5!

    "visiting an oldie..."
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Good to listen to whilst long distant driving...Read this book as a 12 - 13 year old, like most people... re-hearing it, made me realise how TV graphics have changed the idea of 'terror'.

If you’ve listened to books by John Wyndham before, how does this one compare?

    Good author

What three words best describe Samuel West’s performance?

    Very proper pronunciation!

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

couldn't quite get through the movie, better as a book.

    "Wyndham is underrated"

My previous experiences of reading Wyndham have been in his "childrens" novels which I loved as a child and now love as a man. This is written on a more adult scale and despite the fact that time has overtake some of the ideas in the book there are others which remain absolutely plausible today. The story is well written, well narrated and thoroughly enjoyable.

"Good Classic Sci Fi, stands the test of time"

Narration was truly excellent. Story is a classic apocalyptic yarn. I had forgotten how poignant this book can be, having not read it for years, but also I had forgotten the optimistic and humour moments. A fast paced book, not dull. Definitely worth the credit. (And will you ever view lights in the night sky the same way again?)
