"Leavitt is able to demonstrate his . . . talent for empathy, his ability to write persuasively about highly emotional issues." (Michiko Kakutani, New York Times)
"In understated, perfectly targeted prose, Leavitt illuminates the ordinariness of his characters, giving them and their sorrows and joys a long-lasting afterglow." (Publisher’s Weekly)
“A compassionate, moving work.” (Library Journal)
This novel follows the four members of the Cooper family through the mother's illness. The narrator is very good, and really adds to the experience giving each character a unique voice. This is helped by Leavitt's perfectly targeted style and each character is so perfectly realised that you feel like you could recognise them. The book leaves a long-lasting afterglow. Highly recommended, along with all of Leavitt's other work.
