Publisher's Summary

Autumn 1942. Hitler's legions have swept across Europe, France has fallen, Churchill and the English stand isolated on their island. In North Africa, Rommel and his Panzers have routed the British Eighth Army and stand poised to overrun Egypt, Suez, and the oil fields of the Middle East. With the outcome of the war hanging in the balance, the British hatch a desperate plan: send a small, highly mobile, and heavily armed force behind German lines to strike the blow that will stop the Afrika Korps in its tracks.

Steven Pressfield brings to life the flair, agility, and daring of this extraordinary historical commando unit, the Long Range Desert Group. He describes in detail the tactics, weaponry, and specialized skills needed for combat under extreme desert conditions. He captures, too, the camaraderie of this "band of brothers" as they perform the acts of courage and cunning crucial to the Allies' victory in North Africa. As in his acclaimed earlier novels, Pressfield combines historical accuracy and edge-of-your-seat battle scenes to create riveting fiction.

What the Critics Say

"Crisp writing carries readers through success, failure and a final face-to-face encounter with Rommel that's no less exciting for knowing the outcome." (Publishers Weekly)

    "Killing Rommel"

I have never read/listened to this author. I decided to give it a try and would like to say it was an excellent book. I enjoyed it and would recommend it if you like WWII action type of stories. I thought the ending was super.

    "Humble Hero"

"Killing Rommel" presents a straightforward personal account of one limited-scale special operations campaign in North Africa during WWII, written in the style of a memoir. Mr. Pressfield presents the unassuming courage and emotional conflicts of one man in a way that enlightens without seeming overbearing. He also portrays perfectly the true randomness of armed conflict. The pacing was just right and the Kiwi, British and German characters were believable. This is a great listen if you are looking for inspiration in the face of trying circumstances.

    ""Jolly Good!""

The first half was devoted to the heavy lifting of 'stage setting' and character introduction. For me, the Period, the language and social structure of British society was facinating. And the writing and story telling were brilliant so I loved it.

Because the story was so well researched, with scrupulous attention to detail, by the second half when the action starts, it is riviting. The battle scenes were dramatic and graphic without being gratuetous, and always with an overarching pathos that gives this book its heart.

I've enjoyed re-listening to this book several times, picking up nuances missed in prior listenings.

If you like great writing and a compelling story - give this a tumble. If you like great writing, a compelling story, within a WWII war context - it is a must!

    "Excellent Book, Excellent Reading"

An amazing story. I thoroughly enjoyed this Audiobook. For anyone who loves historical fiction, this is excellent. There are not only the rich details of life in the WWII North Africa Campaign, but profound messages about maintaining your humanity in the midst of war. The audiobook reading is also excellent and lends a dimension to the story you might not get from reading the book.

    "Pressfield's Best To Date"

Generally I am not a fan of fiction and non-fiction accounts of ancient or modern warfare, but I find Steven Pressfield's novels to be some of the best historical fiction published today. In the past year, I have read and listened to three of his novels, and Killing Rommel is the best so far. Alfred Molina's reading of this excellent piece of historical fiction is the icing on the cake.

Don't hesitate a moment to download this book. Do it now. You'll find it difficult to turn off your MP3 player or computer once you start listening.

    "Wonderful book"

This is a great book for audio that was on one of those "best of" lists I saw for 2008. I actually had to replay the beginning half way through when the reader states that it is fiction. This is a look at WWII that you have not seen before; the war was exciting, suspenseful, and they all wanted to be there. Not exactly the "Greatest Generation" stuff we have been inundated with, but better. The hero's wife also did not want to miss anything so she volunteered and is right there in Africa, even while pregnant. The hero says that British public schools prepared men for the war. A great time to be a man or a woman. Would I ( a woman) have gone? Not to be forgotten, terrific narration by Alfred Molina.

    "Loved It"

What a terrific book, which brings to light both history and personality.

A rare gem! I can't recommend this highly enough to anyone who enjoys war stories.

I am somewhat a WWII buff, and this book brought so many tidbits and interesting facts and story lines to light that it kept me riveted.

"Not the subject for Pressfield's style"

Pressfield's style lends itself very well to the ancient world. However, that style applied to modern history doesn't exactly fit. The characters were likeable enough, but I never really developed a real care for their exploits and missions. Events that should have had me riveted did not. While I quite enjoyed several of Pressfield's other books, this one was not for me.

Great read (or should I say listen). Sweated out the days and froze during the nights.
