On the beautiful Outer World planet of Solaria, a handful of human colonists lead a hermitlike existence, their every need attended to by their faithful robot servants. To this strange and provocative planet comes Detective Elijah Baley, sent from the streets of New York with his positronic partner, the robot R. Daneel Olivaw, to solve an incredible murder that has rocked Solaria to its foundations.
The victim had been so reclusive that he appeared to his associates only through holographic projection. Yet someone had gotten close enough to bludgeon him to death while his robots looked on. Now Baley and Olivaw are faced with two clear impossibilities: Either the Solarian was killed by one of his robots, unthinkable under the Laws of Robotics, or he was killed by the woman who loved him so much that she never came into his presence!

"Science Fiction at it's best"
Isaac Asimov's “Naked Sun” is science fiction at it's Finest. This is a story of the human race as it spreads it's wings to populate the galaxy. The interplay between mother earth and it’s children who have grown up and surpassed the home world and the inevitable conflict that arises from that fact. Mr. Asimov relates how the elements of socialization and adaptation to the differing environments can change who and what we are as people far into the future. He uses the basic emotions and feelings that makes us human to tell the story. Then by taking those emotions and feeling that are so human and central to the story he introduces an element that is completely contrary to humanity. Robots. No one can weave a finer story based on the interplay of human and robot like Mr. Asimov.
This is the second of 4 book that makes up Asimov's “Robot Novels” and is truly a classic. Humans and robots, fear and phobia, passion and loathing, crime and punishment with a galactic twist. The most unique part of the story is that it could be Bogart or Columbo of the future solving the crime that no one else can. Classic deduction and reasoning except for the fact that the setting is hundreds of light years from Earth and he has a partner that is a robot, and the fact that everything that happens revolves around robots and Asimov’s famous Three Laws of Robotics.
Asimov is the master of the traditional science fiction novel. His intelligence and understanding are very much a part of his writing style. His forward thinking is revealed in many instances through out the book while some advances he foresaw in the 50s (when the book was written) didn't quite make it into the 21st century.
This is a story that is highly complex in many ways yet is so easy to follow. It flows from one chapter to the next, but is far from a simple story. I guess that anyone who writes more than 500 books must like what he is doing and it shows.
"The Best Science Fiction . . ."
is always about the "people." The people may have one eye and eight legs, breathe methane and hatch from eggs, but if the author can make you care about them a good story can be created. "Naked Sun" deserves the title "Classic." It is a book of many layers. In simplest terms it is a whodunit set in a galaxy far, far away. But it is also an exploration of who we are as a people and what we might become; a story of the triumph of technology and technology run amok; a story of the failure, and triumph, of the human spirit. I am not a huge Asimov fan, but "Naked Sun" is a favorite.
"Partners again!"
What a treat to find a sequel to "The Caves of Steel" and to hear again from Elijah and Daneel! Here is another mystery for them to solve, which leaves me baffled, but luckily for all the partners are hard at work. The narration fit the story, and the story was wonderful! I recommend this book wholeheartedly!
"Great Story"
I couldn't put this down. I loved the logical puzzles and interesting dialogue.
"Another great work by Asimov!"
This narrator really knows how to bring Asimov's work to life. Excellent work! Cannot wait until I listen to Robots of Dawn...
"Not bad"
Not bad for a scifi book written so long ago.
I dont do spoilers.
He does a decent robot voice.
No.
"Very nice second story in a line"
phobias, phobias, murder :-)
Its very well written episode from a robots series, however, I find the Caves of steel a bit better. Maybe because it was a first book of that kind.
Elijah Baley
Yes
"Very fun"
I love the old time syfi! It is amazing how prophetic some of it is. Make sure you listen to the whole series in order! I can't remember if this is the first book.
