Publisher's Summary

John Rain has fled to Brazil to clear his killing conscience. But his talents are still in demand. The assignment: take out an arms dealer in Southeast Asia. The upside: strictly finanical. The downside: crossing the path of an Israeli spy equipped with her own unique talents - for seduction, betrayal, and life-and-death games more sinister than any that Rain has encountered before....

    "Paranoid"

Reading this book will make you paranoid. I keep looking over my shoulder for assassins. I double back when I go anywhere. I know I am being followed.
This BOOK is addictive and will make you insane. John Rain is a BAMF.

"Very much more of the same"

Eisler writes competently and his plots are interesting enough to carry a reader along nicely. Unfortunately once you have read one of the Rain novels, the next one sounds entirely familiar with little in the way of further character development. Essentially that adds up to extremely detailed descriptions of the martial arts techniques Rain uses to dispatch his usually faceless adversaries and extensive bouts of introspection about how difficult it is to have a normal relationship while you are cutting a lethal swath through the world of international intrigue.

There is no nuance here and not much humanity, but if you are primarily looking for action and interesting settings, John Rain may be worth your time and credit. In addition there might be a special attraction here for martial arts aficionados, and Nishii does a nice job of reading the books.

    "Eisler is Great"

The John Rain series always delivers. I have read the first three and each one was as good the others. They are hard to put down. The books take you all over the world and the cast of international characters is great. He does kill a large number of people and they are described in vivid detail. But he only kills people who deserve it. The narrator does a good job with all the dialects.

    "John Rain Rules"

Barry Eisler really nailed it with this delightfully "noir" series. Its a combination of background moods - the existentialism, the urban loneliness, the always lurking danger, the moral question, the women, the single malt, the jazz. It all works. he contrives a good plot and keeps torquing it tighter. I first read the series from a random discovery in the library. Then when "The Detachment" was released on Audible, I decided to revisit them all in audio. My one disappointment has to do with the use of several different narrators. You'd like some continuity, as you go from book to book. But each one is good in their own right. Barry himself narrates the last book and does an excellent job as well, even uttering the random Japanese phrases with perfect accent.

"Berry Eisler one of the best thriller authors"
Would you listen to Rain Storm again? Why?

I not just would listen to Rain Storm again. I'm already doing it. I usually listen to a good audio books at least twice and this one is brilliant.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Delilah. I especially enjoyed the dialogues with Delilah. They are all very interesting and entertaining The meeting, get-together, with Delilah at the hotel Peninsula was the best.

Have you listened to any of Brian Nishii’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have listened to Brian Nishii's plerformances in Rain Fall. I think he gives in Rain Storm an even better performance. All the different voices are very well-defined.
Especially Dox’s voice perfectly fits his character.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I would have liked to listen to Rain Rain Storm in one sitting, but I just haven't got the time to do this. It is a thriller just as gripping as the other novels by Barry Eisler I have listened to so far. It’ll keep you on the edge of your seat. I usually listen to my audio books in my car on my way to and from work, that's about 40 min per day. Sometimes I stay in the car for a little longer because I just can't stop listening or take the CD with me to listen to it later in the house.

    Any additional comments?

Rain Storm was my fifth novel by Barry Eisler. Before that I had listened to The Detachment , Inside Out, Rain Fall and Hard Rain. I was hooked after ‘The Detachment’ and bought all audio books by Barry Eisler I could get. Now I listen to my collection in the right sequence as they are all sequels.

I was again impressed by the description of the judo and martial arts scenes in this book. All scenes are described in detail which makes listening almost like watching a movie. This book too provides a lot of inside into surveillance techniques and surveillance detection.
The story line is perfect, there are some surprises and a very good ending.

    "reader puts you to sleep"

Not the best in this series by FAR, and the fact that the reader is sooooo sloooow makes it all the more tedius. If this were the first one of this series I'd purchased I would never get another

What did you love best about Rain Storm?

Well written and researched. Odd how someone could kill for a living and actually have true feelings and unquestionable ethics.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I listen to audible books on my iPhone Audible app. The download on part 2 was incomplete. I did try downloading it again, but no luck. I never found out how the book ended.

    "A BIG DISAPPOINT for ME!"
What did you like best about Rain Storm? What did you like least?

I labored to finish listing to this book waiting for the excitement! I expected more! There were a FEW parts that might have been more exciting but the Narrator did NOT seem to have the level of excitement in his voice to suck you into this one. For ME it felt more like I was on a Tourist Tour of the Cities the Main Character visited, very descriptive, was nice IF I were on that Tour Bus. The Author also gave a lot of description of other minial things like the clothes the Main Character bought. At least this is what it did for me, perhaps others would find it more enjoyable to listen too, I don't know...What do I know I am a Novice listener I can only speak for myself.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Include more excitement and action to the storyline! Perhaps with a different Narrator I MIGHT have enjoyed it better who know??

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

Seemed too monotone for me (did not seem that he had the level of excitement in his voice) maybe that is WHY I did NOT enjoy listening to it.

Could you see Rain Storm being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Perhaps...I can not really comment on this questions since I did NOT enjoy it!

    "Skip this book entirely!!"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Better story, better dialogue, better reader.

What could Barry Eisler have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Write a more believable story with much better dialogue between characters.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Brian Nishii?

    Anybody

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Gross diaappointment

    Any additional comments?

I have purchased hundreds of audio books over the years and this is the FIRST review I have ever written. I use them on long trips to distract me during plane and car travel primarily and upon occasion during work commutes. My standards are relatively low, just a reasonably believable story and some decent dialogue (again believable) between characters with a somewhat interesting subject to maintain at least a low level of interest. This book failed in all areas, the story line was so stupid I lost interest repeatedly and if I hadn't paid $21 for it would have deleted it in the first 100 pages. The reader is so mono-tonal and BORING that it is painful and when you combine that with non-realistic dialogue (a marine sniper assassin, "oh my goodness", come on!) that leads virtually nowhere and does nothing to develop the character it didn't even meet my minimal standards.

This is the WORST audio book I have ever suffered through, should have been free and then it would have been overpriced. Will never buy this author again and absolutely never listen to another book by this reader, he was terrible. Would have given it less than 1 star if that was possible.
