Publisher's Summary

In the seventh book of the internationally best-selling series by crime queen Lynda La Plante (Prime Suspect), newly promoted DCI Anna Travis takes charge of an investigation for the first time. But is it purely a missing person's case - or a full blown murder inquiry?

An ominous pool of blood and no victim lead Anna on a desperate hunt for a man who has disappeared without a trace. As Anna becomes obsessed with seemingly irrelevant details, her superintendent fears that she is losing control. With no body there is no case, and Anna is under increasing pressure to make an arrest.

    "Pretty good story"

I'm a huge fan of Lynda LaPlante's cinematic writing style. Prime Suspect, starring the incomparable Helen Mirrren, is still one of my favorite TV experiences: good story-telling, excellent characters and lots of character development. Anna Travis is another good character - flawed and human, trying to figure out how to have a personal life when the job occupies all of her mental and physical energy. The book opens with Anna back at work after the brutal murder of her fiance. Distracted and depressed, she lands her first murder case as a newly minted DCI. Her former lover and current DCS, James Langton, looks over her shoulder too much for my liking; however, Anna manages to solve the case with her team. The plot is quite convoluted and probably didn't need to be. The performance was great. In all, it isn't a fantastic story but it was good to check in with Anna again.
