Dragon Haven: Rain Wilds Chronicles, Volume 2

I loved this author's Farseer trilogy. I loved her Soldier son Trilogy. I though her Tawny man trilogy was also good. I was looking forward to such a trilogy in the Rain Wilds trilogy. I felt very little happened in the first book. In this last book, just a little more happened. I guess the closest thing I can compare how I feel about this series so far is this: It's just like when you are very hungry, an excellent cook invites you to a meal, you sit down to eat, and instead of getting some solid, delicious food, you get watered down soup without any meat, peas, or anything - just hot water. I believe Robin Hobb is a great writer, but this series really hasn't borne that out.

I am always looking for a good new epic fantasy. If you are like me and doing the same and have already done the greats (Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time, George R. R. Martin's A song of ice and fire series - warning: Martin is slow about finishing this series so it gets frustrating) try Brandon Sanderson's books - Elantris is very good. So is his Mistborn series. His new book - War breaker is also pretty good. It seems he is batting a thousand right now - everything he is putting out is pretty good.
There is a series I read recently that was also pretty good - The Deeds of Parksenarion Dathsandotter(a female heroine).
Jack Campbell's Lost Fleet series just got finished - it was very good. Jim Butlter's Codex Alera series is excellent - I have listened to it at least 10 times this year - the series just concluded although I hope JB will continue the series or start a new series that continues the story.

Brent Week's Night Angel trilogy wasn't bad (The way of Shadows, etc). Although I kept seeing reflections of other series in it - a lot of the elements of the world were very similar to elements from the Wheel of Time series.
There are others, but the above is probably good enough for right now.

I am a big fan of Robin Hobb, and have loved all of her series. This book is good, but it seems like a little more of the same of the first. I thought there would be more of a change but it seems the whole voyage up the Rain Wild river drags on and on. I know it's a long journey for the characters in the story, but almost two full books of the same thing gets a bit boring. I was still interested in the story and do look forward to the next book.

This is a great book, consistent with Robin Hobb's usual high standards! Of course, Anne Flosnik's narration only adds to the story - it seems to me that Hobb's and Flosnik's styles are perfectly suited to one another and combine to make Hobb's book even that much better.

I must disagree with the other reviewer - having read/listened to the first book in Brent Weeks' Night Angel Trilogy, I would NOT recommend it. Weeks does not possess the maturity as a writer and I kept getting the feeling that portions had been written by a 15-year old male. The first book in the trilogy was tolerable at best and I do not plan to read the other two. I feel like I wasted time reading the first one.

However, after finishing the second book in Hobb's The Rain Wilds Chronicles today, I feel a warm glow when I think about the progression of the characters from the first book and excitement as I look forward to the third installment!

Dragon Haven is an excellent follow up to the 1st book in this trilogy. After reading Dragon Keeper I was already fully engaged with the characters, and this book continues to build on that while still furthering and adding to the storyline. I cannot wait for the 3rd book to be published and tie everything together. Seriously, I am chewing my nails in anticipation! I still love the narrator, her voice lulls me into forgetting where I am. Much love for this series!

This was a pretty good book and I found the characters were well developed. I wish the dragons were different, being a dragon lover. I was hoping the story was more about them, but it wasn't. It was a decent story and one I hope that will develop more about about the dragons in following books. The reader was good and was able to use different voices for different characters, which I like. The story did drag from time to time and I wish there was more action in it. If you have dragons in a story, there is usually action! Don't plan on too much with this story. The dragons were not very likeable at all, which disappointed me.

this is an absolutely terrific book i would reccomend it to all, there was only one thing i did not like and it was just that when the story came to a conversation or someone thinking to themselves it would delve way to deep into backround and it trails on and on, but after you get past that it is a terriffic story.

This story just gets better and better. The story line continues to develop....new characters get added and it makes perfect sense that they are there.....you just don't know what will happen. I recommend this series!

The story is very good. The author manages to make an entire new world but not one that is difficult to understand.

I wouldn't say the narrator is quite as bad as some other people are saying but I can definitely understand that she doesn't appeal to some listeners.

I like this book, although it has a bit of a "filler" element, being obviously the second in a series. However, Flosnik's overly mannered reading style makes it difficult to listen to. These books would be so much better with a narrator who wasn't so determined to make ridiculous vowel sounds.
