A new Miss Julia novel from New York Times best-selling author Ann B. Ross is a special treat for her devoted fans as well as those new to the adventures of the titular senior citizen. This time out, the proper Southern lady has a couple doozies on her plate.
It seems that her friend Hazel’s PI husband, J.D,. has gotten himself in some trouble in West Virginia - and he’s one tirade away from landing in a jail cell. Meanwhile, a crew of misfits has followed wealthy Agnes Whitman back to Abbotsville, and they have all the makings of a crazy religious cult!

"Another Winner"
Oh So Funny!
I really can't think of any, Miss Julia is a unique character.
She did better this time than some of her other Miss Julia performances, sometimes she forgets how she did a voice of certain characters from book to book and messes them up bad so she should listen to a previous book before recording the new one.
Yes
I love Miss Julia books though it is a bit nerve wracking how the writer Ms. Ross will forget what she has written from a previous book and will completely change it in the current book when the characters are referring to it. Also she consistently makes Miss Julia sound stupid at times by not having the character make sense. She did it again in this book when she hired a carpenter to build something and goes in detail about how she wants them and only a few sentences later says they are already ordered and just needs to be installed.
"Just plain bizarre"
I spent most of the book consciously suspending disbelief that things could possibly have happened the way they did. As far as structure goes, there are two plot points, with a "spinoff" (subplot) of the second one.
First, Miss Julia and Etta Mae end up "rescuing" J. D. Pickens from police custody in West Virginia; he's in the local hospital doped to the gills, suffering from gunshot wounds. That whole mess would've been easily resolved in real life, by having Coleman ask the WV sheriff for a description of the guy they're holding as John Doe. Did he do that? Of course not! And then, not long after he's back home, Pickens is hosting a dinner party -- they way he was tossed about like a sack of potatoes by Julia and Etta Mae, he should've been in intensive care! The same sheriff who was close-mouthed to the point of being hostile later becomes a complete pussycat. Okay ...
Attention turns to the new "cult" in town ... wherein people are getting tattoos and piercings as part of a "religious" experience. Clearly Ms. Ross highly disapproves of this practice; I recommend she NOT consider any vacations to Seattle in the near future!
Sam, not being needed here for his propensities to utter "Oh, Julia!" and to initiate sexual activity, has been shipped off to the Holy Land with a church group. So, Miss Julia is re-doing the house in his absence, including a dedicated writing room as a surprise. The oh-so-nice evangelical young carpenter she's hired, and taken a liking to, goes missing, so she and Etta Mae have another zany outing to get him out of the clutches of the "cult" (and back to fundamentalist Christianity instead).
I understand that Miss Julia leads a relatively sheltered life, but she does come off here as highly judgmental, petty, and nasty. Frankly, one can probably skip this book altogether in the series, as there aren't any events that should affect future stories. Not particularly recommended, although Cynthia Darlow does her usual good job with the narration.
"Great book - Great Laughs- Couldn't put it down"
I have not read the print version but I have read other Miss Julia books and I love listening to them
Always! Miss Julia and her crazy ideas keep you laughing and intrigued
Miss Julia. I love her in every book. Etta Mae was a close second in this particular book.
Oh absolutely. I listened to it in approx 2 - 5 hours sittings
Such a great book for any age. My grandmother, mother, and I all love them!
"Miss Julia makes my day!"
Yes, and I have... There are a dozen friends who are reading this series since I have recommended or shared one of the Miss Julia books with them...and we all love this series. Why? Because we can all use a little fun and laughter in our lives, and Miss Julia reminds us what trouble one can get into, and out of, with friends and family...she is a joy.
Well, not on the edge of my seat, but it did keep me happily reading, and now and then I would stop to just giggle at this story.... One never knows what Miss Julia is going to get into next.
We all love Miss Julia, and Little Lloyd, but I adore Lillian.... My favorite books are those when Lillian and Julia get into trouble together....
It made me laugh, and it sure puts a smile on your face when you read or listen to this series.
I often read series books, Father Tim, Miss Dorothy, and so many others; but Miss Julia is the one I love the best.... This series always gives you a laugh, and makes you feel like your right at home with the cast of characters. I have read much of this series, but enjoy the audio as the characters come to life... I never grow tired of this series, and have a dozen friends now reading and listening to this wonderful series of books.... Keep on going Miss Julia, we all love you!

"THEBEST LAUGH FROM MISS JULIA, EVER."
IF SHE COULD GET IN MORE TROUBLE, I CANNOT THINK OF IT. A LOVELY HEARTED WOMAN, WITH A BIT OF SOUTHERN STIFFNESS, I COULD NOT QUIT LAUGHING, OUT LOUD EVEN THOUGH I HAD MY HEADSET ON. MY HUSBAND SAYS, I LOVE YOUR LAUGH (ANOTHER SAM). I HAVE LAUGHED FOR YEARS WITH ANN B. ROSS, BUT SHE IS JUST GETTING BETTER.
MISS JULIA PAINTS THE TOWN
STUFFING J.D. INTO A CAR WITH A BULLET WOUND IN THE DERRIERE, THE POOR MAN SHOULD NEVER BE ABLE TO WALK AGAIN. FROM THERE THE LAUGHS JUST KEPT COMING WITH A GREAT STORY WOVEN IN HER EXPERT MANNER. PLEASE KEEP THEM COMING, AND OF COURSE THE LAUGHS; IT SETS YOU APART FROM THE OTHER RIDERS. EVEN JANET EVANOVICH, AND DIANE DOTT MATT DAVIDSON, OTHER COZY MYSTERIES THAT ARE WELL WRITTEN AND FULL OF MYSTERY. ANOTHER ONE I LOVE IS SARAH GRAVES,SHE KEEPS ME CAPTIVATED BUT I DO NOT NEED THE KLEENEX. PLEASE ANN, WRITE MORE, I LIVE FOR YOUR BOOKS.
GETTING J.D. INTO A TINY TRUNK WITH A BULLET WOUND IN THE WORSE POSSIBLE PLACE A MAN CAN GET ONE. THIS TALE I REWOUND AND REWOUND, AS IT GOT FUNNIER AS I PICKED UP POINTS I MISSED THE FIRST TIME. I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE ANN B. ROSS, AS A PERSONAL FRIEND, WE THINK ALIKE.
READ IT BUT THE BEST FUN IS TO LISTEN TO IT, THE NARRATION IS HILARIOUS.
"Awesome book."
This is probably one of my favorite books of Miss Julia. I think I have heard them all and really emjoy them.
Julia....... You never know what she is going to do. She is so funny at times.
Just the Miss Julia ones
"Disappointing Miss Julia"
I love the series but this one fell way short. It was homophobic and anti- any religion but mainstream. Miss Julia is way better than this story.
Yes, I'd try again.
Yes, Cynthia Darlow was fine.
Its always good to catch up with the characters in the story.
Give us back our open-minded Miss Julia!
