Publisher's Summary

John Hanson joined the military because he wanted to serve his country. Lacking a home and family of his own, the idealistic young man longed to be a part of something bigger than himself. He didn’t expect to find love in officer’s training - so when an assignment took him away from Kevin Kendrick, the love of his life, he sacrificed personal happiness and did his duty.

Kevin has made his own sacrifices. Career came first and the impressionable Army brat, tired of living in his father’s shadow, pledged his loyalty to his country and followed his ambition. Now, seven years later, when the Army that Kevin so faithfully served has made him the scapegoat for their latest Middle East snafu, he can only think of one place to go, one man who can provide solace and heal his wounds - John.

Reunited, the two war-torn lovers once again discover their passion for life, love, and one another. But Kevin’s past isn’t through with him yet, and when an old enemy surfaces, the two men realize that they must together face the nightmares of the past if they are to have the future they dream of.

What did you love best about Walking Wounded?

i was thoroughly amused throughout by the juxtaposition of hard core military types with the sweet relationship and their daily acts of building a life together. one minute they're debating kitchen paint and the next they're at target practice. i've listened to this book at least three times and i still chuckle to myself each time.

What other book might you compare Walking Wounded to and why?

m/m romance novels. i imagine people might be disappointed if they were hoping for cover to cover fiery sex scenes. to me this was much more reflective of the actual experience of being in love, where mundane domesticity can be very romantic. also, unlike a lot of books in that genre, there was no unnecessary angst or drama which makes me want to shoot myself (or stop listening).

What does Jim Bowie bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

    an accent.

    Any additional comments?

it's true, they do spend some time discussing home decor. i actually love this about the book - hearing about a gorgeous giant bathtub is akin to porn for the likes of me.

Would you try another book from Lee Rowan and/or Jim Bowie?

Of course. I would try another. This book wasn't poorly written and the premiss wasn't bad, but I JUST needed a faster pace. The story lagged a bit, but picked up a bit at the end. The beginning and end was good but the middle... well....

Has Walking Wounded turned you off from other books in this genre?

No, of course not. I don't think it was a bad book, just a lagging story.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Jim Bowie?

Jim has improved quite a bit with other books. In this one he didn't distinguish the voices well. Other books with Jim aren't bad though. It was also difficult because the author didn't say who had spoken. So sometimes it was hard to tell who was talking.

What character would you cut from Walking Wounded?

Not really character, just some parts. The parts about looking for an apartment and details about the bathroom, were just TOO long and not interesting. Otherwise, the characters were sweet.

    Any additional comments?

For the price, it was enjoyable. If some parts could be cut out, it would be a great read actually. I can't say anything against the author and the narrator. It wasn't perfect but it wasn't the worst I've heard on audible. I expect that other books will get better.

Would you try another book from Lee Rowan and/or Jim Bowie?

I may try another book by Lee Rowan, but definately not Jim Bowie. There is no dicernable difference between the characters voices which makes following the story extremely difficult.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

I couldn't make it through the whole book, so I can't really say.

What didn’t you like about Jim Bowie’s performance?

One couldn't tell the difference between characters in his performance, which made it virtually impossible to follow the story.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Anger. It seems as though the gay love stories on this site are slapped together on very low budget compared to the quality books audible normally offers. It is a shame the same care and quality don't go into this genre.
