Tarl Cabot has always believed himself to be a citizen of Earth. He has no inkling that his destiny is far greater than the small planet he has inhabited for the first 20-odd years of his life. One frosty winter night in the New England woods, he finds himself transported to the planet of Gor, also known as Counter-Earth, where everything is dramatically different from anything he has ever experienced. It emerges that Tarl is to be trained as a Tarnsman, one of the most honored positions in the rigid, caste-bound Gorean society. He is disciplined by the best teachers and warriors that Gor has to offer...but to what end?
This is the first book of John Norman's popular and controversial Gorean Saga, a series of novels the author began in 1967 with Tarnsman of Gor and are now considered cult classics. This audiobook is based on the definitive edition recently published by E-Books.

"Escape to Gor!"
Having discovered this series back in the late 70's, I was delighted to see it listed on Audible.
As expected, I enjoyed it immensely, having lost none of its original appeal. In fact, listening to it now, I can???t help but wonder how much of today???s accepted Sci-Fi lore can be attributed to early works such as this.
A world where modern day weapons and technology are banned. Where men lived by a simpler and more honorable code. Flying mounts. Sound familiar? Well here is one of the originals and its hasn???t dated a bit.
My only minor criticism is the narrator, who does a good enough job with the reading itself, but I found he just didn???t have the type of voice I would have expected for the main character. As it is read in the first person, I found it took some time to become accustomed that the voice you were hearing was coming from a young, athletic Englishman, turned fierce warrior of Gor.
That aside, it???s an enjoyable listen and one that I highly recommend.

"A good yarn But..."
When I first read the series ten years ago, it was quite disturbing in a chauvinistic in a sexual way. The story was good, and fun. the science must be taken with a the grain of salt, but that's ok its an adventure story not a text. These days with the heavy hitting S&M story's like Shades of Grey, John Norman has nothing of the shock value his tale had back in the day. The story ties aliens with abducted earthlings, medieval sword and arrow play into an entertaining series. If you are into online Role playing, whole lands are devoted to this series in Second life, so read it and live it as well if you desire. Enjoy!
"Imaginative sci-fantasy rooted in the real world"
The opening book of the Gorean Saga gives a background of the protagonist and his father, which sets the reader up nicely for the rest of the series, but it seems a bit drawn out and, well, boring. This is a struggle that many opening books of epic series fight with and it is definitely not a reason to avoid the book. I liked the imagination of the connected alternate reality of Gor and it is easy to immerse myself vicariously through the protagonist.
Yes, of course. Having invested the time to learn the Gorean characters I now feel obligated to read more of the stories...but I'm not complaining!
I really liked the gruffness and authority behind the story that Lister brings. Most other narrators would not have pulled this difficult subject matter off as well.
Please...don't. I shudder with visions of Conan the Destroyer.
This series might be the missing link behind pop fiction and epic fantasy. It is better than the average grocery store rag but somehow it misses the intangibles belonging to the greats.
"The Gorean saga begins!"

"A ripping yarn"
An excellent performance by Ralf Lister brings the book alive and makes it a good introduction to the Gor Saga compensating largely for the weaknesses in characterisation and the extra-ordinary co-incidences in the plot. The Target audience (presumably adolescent boys) will really enjoy this as well as those of us who can still suspend disbelief and are schoolboys at heart or who wish to learn about Gor.LIght fantasy adventure literature at its best. with an element of déjà vu.
The ending held no particular surprise remaining classic for the genre
No
The pace was good and made the book hard to turn off
"still awesome"
I read these books when I was a kid. It takes a short time to get used to the narrator's syntax and voice inflection, but once you do it's an excellent presentation.
"I had hear good things about this series."
Because I had hear good things, I tried it. I was NOT disapointed.
For those who love SciFi/Fantasy novels, this was absolutely wonderful. I can't wait to get the next in the series.
For me the most memorable moment was when the main character was going to be ripped apart. I was on the edge of my seat!!
I have not heard anything else by Ralph Lister, but I am hoping that he is the narrator for the rest of the series.
"Great job!"
The first of the, by now, 29 books of the “Chronicles of the Counter Earth”. A must listen for anybody interested in the Gorean Lifestyle.
The narrator Ralph Lister is great and very clear even for now native English listeners.
I recommend it 100% and hope the whole series keep being published at this rate of one every a two months. I, for one, will keep buying.
"Simply the best series"
Read this series back in the day with you know what trilogy but to me this series is simply amazing. One of the best adventure tales I have ever read. I can't wait for the next book to get done. There are 25 books in the series, this could be a good long term series. I have been planning on collecting the books again but have only read up to about book 9. They are all great skipping the slave girl of gor.
I drive a truck. Audible helps the miles go by. I normally look for LONG books. 30 Hrs+. Latest is the North and South Trilogy. (Still waiting for Heaven and Hell)
"A truly great series!"
So happy to find this on audible after reading the series back in the 70's!
The narrator captures the essence of the story and makes the characters come alive! Truly a great listening, and adventurous experience. I can't wait for all 25 in the series to become available here.
