Do you eat when you feel upset? Do you turn to chocolate when you’ve had a bad day? Do you want to lose weight? This self help course, designed by Anne Morrison, Clinical and Cognitive Behaviour Hypnotherapist, can help you change your comfort eating habits. It guides you through a step by step process which will help you identify and change your relationship with food and how you cope with upset in your life. It consists of 8 steps, each one building on the work of the last.
The audio content lasts for over six hours. Overall the course will take you a minimum of five weeks if you follow all the steps and exercises, which are all designed to help you make the changes you want to make.
You may find that you want to revisit some sections or take longer over them. As you work through the course, you will need to be able to write down your thoughts and responses. You can do this on a laptop, PC, or by hand, in a note book. You will need to be able to store and read what you have written, as you will refer back to it at different times during the course. You may also want to apply the process that you follow to different issues in the future so keeping the work you do will remind you of the steps you took.

I have always been a bit leery of hypnotherapy, assuming it was mumbo-jumbo of some sort. But a good friend swears by it, so when I saw this audiobook I thought I'd give it a try. I am so glad I did! I have been listening for three weeks now, and my emotional eating habits are gone. Seriously, gone. I would never have believed it possible.
To wit: I took my family to our favorite burger-and-shakes restaurant for dinner (one of my biggest weaknesses is eating out) and when I realized I wasn't actually hungry, I decided not to order anything. Instead I sat and talked to my family while they ate and didn't feel regret, resentment, deprivation--in fact, it didn't even feel like I was using willpower at all! Trust me, this has never been my experience in my entire life. I stopped eating a root beer float tonight after a couple of bites when I realized that I wasn't enjoying it. I'm making healthier food choices all day long, I'm not eating from boredom or stress or to reward myself. It's really a miracle.
I don't write reviews often, but I have found so much success with this audiobook that I need to share my experience. Thanks, Anne!!
This review is based on the book up to the first self-hypnosis track. I've tried to listen to it about four times now, and I had to write this review about the music. It distracted me and made it difficult to get into the exercise as instructed. In the first self-hypnosis track: The beginning of the piece of music was very loud, with sort of a crescendo of sound. In one case, the crescendo happened on "3" in the hypnosis countdown (where "1" is the most relaxed), so just as I was getting truly relaxed and into it, the music sort of woke me up. Also, it sounded like the music was skipping in a lot of places during this track, and I couldn't help focusing on it. At the end of the segment, the music and Anne's voice just cuts off abruptly, and it goes into the next exercise. Another thing I would change is the amount of questions you have to answer in the first segment. It gets to a point where you feel like you're basically writing the same thing over and over, and it's boring, which distracts from any insight or revelation that might come from this activity.
The explanation of Cognitive-Behavioral Hypnosis was very interesting. The first segment, while a bit tedious, did help with setting a concrete goal. Anne Morrison's vocal style in the self-hypnosis tracks was very relaxing. I gave "performance" five stars because of her vocal style.
This is the first book by Anne Morrison that I've listened to.
I think it needs a follow-up book in which the music issue is fixed. I wish I could have gotten more into the self-hynosis.
I think this book is worth listening to, because there are good concepts here which help with self-examination. Even though I couldn't get into the self-hypnosis part, I did find myself using ideas from the book (like leaving food on my plate and not eating in front of the TV or the computer).
It felt like the author was basing the book on a very specific easy to pinpoint downfall rather than trying to fight a whole lifestyle. Unless you only overeat one food--and only when you're aware that you're especially depressed this won't be of any use.
I'd cut the background music--it was annoying as Hell.
