In Vicky Dreiling’s enchanting Regency romance debut, Tristan - the rakish duke of Shelbourne - wants to marry and sire an heir. To help him choose among the dizzying array of wealthy but witless candidates, he secures the services of prim and proper matchmaker Miss Tessa Mansfield. I have been a member of audible.com for well over a year now and have downloaded several books over this time. I have developed a fondness for historical romances and for the most part, have thoroughly enjoyed the genre. However, to make an audible book work, it is essential to have an excellent narrator who can bring the story to life. The best narrators are really voice actors with an extensive repertoire of acting ability -- altering inflection, accents and subtle nuances which help to create in partnership with the listener, a theater of the mind. Early on I had the pleasure of discovering one of the best voice actors in this genre-- Rosalyn Landor. She is superior -- the timbre of her rich voice is reminiscent of fine cognac or warm honey. In addition, she has honed her craft to such an art form that few can come close to her vocal performance.
Unfortunately, Ms.Elizabeth Jasicki doesn't even come close. She plows through dragging every line with little emotion, such that I'm finding it difficult to even finish listening. Unfortunately I suppose I didn't listen closely enough to the sample or I would have skipped this one altogether. It's really terrible to listen to a story when the person sounds like they're reading it line by line as if by rote. There is no passion in her work at all.
Sorry to say my advice is to actually read the book -- you'll enjoy it more.
I'm addicted to audiobooks. I've listened to probably 300 (maybe more) audiobooks most of which are historical romances. Listening is much easier than reading and you can do other things while listening. When reading you can't do anything but read.
This book mimics the TV show "The Bachelor" which means that it lost it's appeal for me. I thought the book was just okay. The narrator was okay, but doesn't really develop the characters with significantly distinguished voices. I thought this book was just okay.
Could not live without my 2 dogs, humor, books, books and more books ( wishlist is almost endless) oh yeah, I try myself at gardening..lol
This is Book 1 in this series, Book 2 is " How to Seduce a Scoundrel".
It is no big deal to read them out of order. This was my 2nd book from the Author and have to say that I did enjoy both of Vickeys historical Romances. Elizabeth does a good job narrating.
Historical romance junkie. Who doesn't love romance?
The story line was unbelievable because no young woman would be so biddable as to become a human door mat and return again and again for more abuse. I kept hoping the heroine would redeem herself by growing a spine and at times she would show a tiny bit of it but usually not. The tortured hero is trite and predictable. The story line flips and flops like a fish out of water, the flow is so disjointed I had to keep checking to insure I hadn't accidentally skipped a chapter or two. Certain key points of the story get a big build up and then are over looked making the reader wonder why they were ever mentioned to begin with, and what there conclusions were. The love scenes were anticlimactic and passed over with little significance. The narrator is well spoken but unfortunately she lacks passion and the male parts come off as insipid and impotent furthering the poor plot line. I have read other books by this author and liked them very much but not this one. I can't decide if it's just the narrator or the story or both. If you don't mind listening to mindless drivel then you will probably like it.
Say something about yourself!
This was a different story but had a few many "lusty" parts for my taste. If that is a bonus for you readers then I think you will like this story. For me, I was more interested in the story line and plot than being entertained by such fantasies. The narrator did a wonderful job carrying the story and I thoroughly enjoyed the characters but I cannot say this is a book I got "attached" to as some avid readers can probably relate.
12 step program please. I am addicted to Audible! I love trashy sexy books, award winning novels and everything between. Bring it!
I really liked this book. It was fun, the characters were likeable, the speed courting and "The Bachelor" like comparisons offered just the right amount of cheezy fun. And of course the romance was just super enjoyable. The attraction between the main characters was layered and for that reason interesting.
I was very apprenhensive about listening to this book but ended absolutely loving it. Very nice storyline and ending. I have never heard of this author but she did a great job, the book was so captivating I couldn't stop listening. Looking forward to more from her. The narrator also did a good job with the narration and voices. Very, very pleased!
Unfortunately I listened to the second book in this series first and had high expectations of this one. This book was a bit laggy and laborious compared to it's follow up.
This book has a good story line if you like books about Dukes and Ladies. So of course I recommend this book. Gotta love stories with happy endings.
