Publisher's Summary

In this classic, romantic ghost story, a governess on a remote country estate begins to believe her charges are possessed by the spirits of 2 dead former servants. Are her perceptions simply the fruit of her neuroses - or could they possibly be valid? A foray into the very heart of evil, Henry James's masterful novel is also remarkable for its psychological acuity and evocation of mood.

    "Well read intriguing novel"

I once read some of this book aloud to friends on a long car trip. Many of the sentences are a joy ride on their own--you don't know where the sentence will take you, and what the journey will be like. Such was this reading of the book--only far better to hear this exquisite narrator revel in the delight of the sentence structure. The story is great in its own right--a mystery novel that fully holds its own--but the plot pales compared to the joy expressed by the narrator in the reading of it.

    "Great book; wonderful reading"

Turn of the Screw is a wonderful book -- a kind of complicated ghost story that showcases the complexities of the interactions between adults and children. This particular reading is wonderful, and the sound quality is excellent.

    "Very British"

This was very well read. I have seen the many movies made made from this story. It was great to hear the original story. The best movie made of this has to be "The Innocents" 1963 The book is very true to it's time period. 1898 So get ready for some real old British language.

    "a bore"

this is the third book by james i have listened to, and i am unlikely to try any more. the narrator does a fine job; it is the book itself that's the problem. james is a bore; his language may be elegant and witty at times, but his work lacks true depth. it did not stir me. james's oevre is best used as a prodigious source of quotes on every subject imaginable. but if you are looking for a literary encounter that will shake, enlighten, and inspire you, my advice is look elsewhere.
