The Serpent Prince

Book 3 of The Prince trilogy but it's totally a stand alone listen with the only link with the previous 2 books is a meeting in a coffee house as the three heroes chat and you realise they were all friends.

As I've said before in other reviews, when you invest 22 hours of your life to a book you hope that investment will be worth it. Well, this certainly was - from Chapter 1 I was hooked and continued to be drawn into a romantic love story that was woven between Simon, hell-bent on a quest to avenge his dead brother by duelling and Lucy a country Lady with a high provincial moral code.

We see Simon (a tortured soul) and Lucy (a smothered soul) being drawn together as she finds him naked and nurses him back to health after being left for dead. As their conversations bring feelings and desires the attraction between them grows rapidly and, as they throw quips and banter with each other, the humour melts their shells and melds them together but Simon has dark secrets and never feels good enough for his Angel Lucy.

However, the very likeable main and secondary characters and events all play their part in eventually tearing them apart with revenge, guilt, murder, heartbreak and desperation making their presence known too. Can love overcome all or will it just not be enough in this well written and well narrated story.

Just one thing - I would have loved an epilogue!

Worth a credit? It's a typical EH book - clever dialogue in a well thought out descriptive plot and if you can shrug off the historical imperfections along with the sexy bits - then you will thoroughly enjoy this long (you could double speed it) but very very enjoyable listen - so that's a Yes for the credit.

This was a good book in the Raven Prince series. This book was not 20 hours long, it was about 10 hours. Not sure why the site says 20 hours or it downloads for 20 hours but it is not. There are 3 books in all but not exactly listed as a series, The order of books is Raven Prince, Leopard Prince and then Serpent Prince. All 3 books were very good, however Leopard Prince was my favorite. I love Elizabeth Hoyt. The Narrator Moira Quirk is fantastic. Worth the credits for sure.

Wow, just wow. So many things in this novel worked really well for me. The main characters, Lucy and Simon are excellent foils for one another (innocent versus jaded, angelic versus corrupted) and I find it refreshing that they were upfront about their feelings for each other almost from the start. Their honesty with one another allowed their relationship evolved in a very organic manner, and (in my opinion) the strong sex scenes served to further develop the characters' relationship rather than just to titillate. Moira Quirk did an outstanding job with the delivery of the story.

The elements of the plot, such as the external conflict (ie. Simon's mission to avenge his brother's murder), were also interesting to read about. The layers to Simon's backstory were gradually revealed as the story progressed, which made the resolution to the conflict very satisfying. The fairytale of the Serpent prince that is woven into the main story was also lovely and appropriate, as it mirrored the dynamics of the characters' growing relationship.

Lastly, the quality of the author's writing was superb. She's crafted some very wonderful dialogue between Lucy and Simon, and has perfected the art of showing the characters' feelings rather than telling.

Story is interesting and narrator is the best of any I've heard before

She can make her voice portray many different characters and you always know who's speaking. Her voice is very pleasing to listen to.

Just enjoyed

As the finale to the princes by this author this book was disappointing. Yes you love the lady lead and you at first like the male lead but I don't think she does a good job really mixing in emotions into their relationship until the last oh say 30 minutes.

It's like they get married because she is enthralled with him but there's really no love - and since he married her for love it makes so sense. Also his prolonged anger is a bit over the top. The weakest of the books.

I love Elizabeth Hoyt books and have most of them in audio so I can't understand why a publisher/producer would take a series and go with an inexperience narrator. When will they understand that an experienced narrator makes the difference in whether a book is tolerable or great.

This narrator has a child-like voice and I could not tell who was speaking. I got through 7 chapters and had to shut it off. I so wanted to listen to all the Prince series but I will go with the written word. Rosalyn Landor, Anne Flosnik, Kate Reading or any of the experienced narrators would have done this justice.

Don't waste your credit.

It's a little iffy after reading this book, if I could continue reading Elizabeth Hoyt books. I really enjoyed the Four Soldier books, and enjoyed The Raven Prince, but it was like slogging thru mud reading The Serpent Prince.

The hero, Simon, irritated me when in one part of the novel he kept saying "I'm sorry". I just wanted to scream! And Lucy was just too good to be true. She didn't really have any redeeming faults.

The minor characters were more interesting than the hero and heroine!

Something different -- maybe a book by Sherrilyn Kenyon. A Night Hunter book.

Moira Quirk did fine.
