    "The Beginning"

I enjoyed this book. The story was a common one in lots of Westerns. I was particularly happy that there was no foul language or explicit sex in the book. I have stopped reading lots of books because of these two items were over done in the stories. If Dusty Rhodes keeps his books clean, he has a new fan in me. Buck obtain the money at the beginning of the story so it seems he was able to do in one year what many ranchers obtain in a lifetime of work. Other wise the story moved along with a good balance of action and character development. Looking forward to book two.

    Story
"The Smell of Stale Whiskey, and Unwashed Bodies?"

I thoroughly enjoyed all four books in this series, and found them well written, and entertaining. However, I did not like the constant "indirect references" to how bad drinking, and smoking was, and how everyone should drink coffee. I felt that this was not the time or place for "PC" references like that. After all, these stories were time situated in the 1800's, and people smoked, drank, and chewed tobacco back then, and still do, and there weren't many places to take a bath in those days, unless you wanted to jump into a cold river or creek to wash up. Indoor plumbing had not been invented yet. I also thought the author went a "bit" overboard on the "love scenes" between Buck & Rebecca, and Cody & Julianna.
Also, the author brings a whole new meaning to the word "fiction" in these books, the main characters could do no wrong, they were constantly falling into situations that caused them to make zillions of dollars, ..........I wish I could fall into just one of those situations these days! These are good books, and if you like westerns you will enjoy them, just a bit to much on the romantic side for me. I do hope the author intends to continue the series!

    "Excellent Story"

Gene Engene performance's in this story was excellent. So many characters but easy to keep up. The story was good too, and I am normally not a western reader. You will enjoy the series.

    "Absolutely Wonderful"

I found this series by accident. I love the narrator so I searched other books he has narrated in the past. Since I also love westerns I snatched up the whole series of 4 on the same day. These are a must to read in order. This one is the first, then The Hondo Kid, The Prodigal Brother, and The Family. Haven't read a western this good since Lonesome Dove. I totally hated to see the series end and am still hoping there might be another addition to it in the future. It's hard for me to fathom that these were written by a semi-retired professional wrestler. They are extremely well done and I will definitely read this series again and again in the future. The characters are wonderfully developed and you will feel as though you know each of them personally. Buy all 4 and you will not want to put down your iPod.

    "Excellent story and well-read!"

This is my first Western audiobook series. I wasn't sure what to expect but I LOVE IT! This book gives great action and plot, some romance for us ladies out there, and is an overall very enjoyable book. I just bought the next 3 in the series! I am glad my first try was a success.

Well read- Gene Engene does a fabulous job.

    "A Rarity"
What did you love best about The Beginning?

Gene Engene as the narrator (perfect!). The Western style. The likeable/hateable characters. The relaxed style.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Beginning?

Buck discovering Chester's condition in the jail.

Which character – as performed by Gene Engene – was your favorite?

Buck. Esp how we came to know him via third person as well as via first person.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. We like to hear a chapter or so, then turn it off, digest it, and discuss it. We're on our second time through the first book of this series now, then will go on to the second book.

    Any additional comments?

My husband and I travel by car a great deal and are always on the search for audio books. It's a rarity to find well-written books on topics of interest to both of us that are well-narrated AND simple enough to keep up with with just our ears. Audio books with more than a dozen or so characters are often just too hard to follow. THIS is one of the best books/series we have found. A great and rare balance. FYI 'Dog Stars' by Peter Heller was equally great for our listening style although it was an entirely different subject matter, setting and style.
