As recounted by Sibyl's precocious 14-year-old daughter, Connie, the ensuing trial bears the earmarks of a witch hunt, except for the fact that all its participants are acting from the highest motives, and the defendant increasingly appears to be guilty. As Sibyl Danforth faces the antagonism of the law, the hostility of traditional doctors, and the accusations of her own conscience, Midwives engages, moves, and transfixes us as only the very best novels ever do.

"Superbly crafted and astonishingly powerful." (People)
"Excellent Quick Listen"
I chose this book off of "Oprah's Book Club List." It is a great, enthralling, realistic story which draws the listener in from the first. The narration is beautiful and well suited to each character. The only downfall is that it was only approx. a four hour listen...I didn't want it to end!
"One of my favorites"
A well-constructed and compelling story of a birth gone wrong. Should midwives be allowed to supervise births? Is the midwife in question competent? Would things have turned out differently if an obstetrician had been in charge? All questions posed and explored in a really good story. I highly recommend this book.
Actually, it is Jennifer, not Michael.
"Childbirth is dangerous Business"
This was an entertaining story, however I think a bit unrealistic. The series of unfortunate circumstances and the fact that the main character was just a random midwife and not actually a certified nurse midwife seemed a stretch.

"Great Story!"
Such an interesting story; I was hooked almost at once and only put it down because I had to go to sleep! I finished it first thing the next morning. I could see this as a movie
Having worked in courtrooms for 20 years, I love true & fictional crime. In love with Cross & Davenport. Fictional lawyer stories rule.
"Great all around!"
Excellent author (1st book of his I've read), great narrator! Can't go wrong with this gem!
I'm an avid audible book listener. I am a huge fan of supernatural books and like stuff that is scary but well written. I'm from Denver Colorado and I have three sons.
"Love this author"
I love the author so I was really excited to download this story, I am not fond of abridged books but wouldn't pass up one of Chris Bohjilians books!
"Short read and very enjoyable"
At first I thought I made a mistake in downloading because it was shorter than most books; however, I appreciate the author not going down circuitous paths with the story or characters. It was a good listen, as all of this author's books have been.
"Good story but what's the point?"
This is well narrated. It's a well written story as well but... I just kept thinking while listening to it - what's the point of the story - you know literally - was it worth creating and telling? I'd say know. I don't give it a bad rating because the writing is good but storyline isn't worth listening to. catches you upfront with the midwife being accused of murder but goes along pretty calmly and then ends. just wasn't worth my while!
"Poignant and thought-provoking"
This is a story about a Vermont midwife who goes outside her area of expertise and gets charged with a crime. The writing is excellent, the story moves along quickly, and this audio performance by Kate Burton is great. You will be thinking about this story after you finish listening to it. Highly recommended.
"Amazing! Couldn't stop listening!"
This was an amazing book! I tried to find excuses to listen to it....normally I just listen when driving but I couldn't stop!
