What the Critics Say

"Cross Lassie with E.T., add a touch of The Wolfen and a dash of The Godfather, and you get a sense of some of the ingredients in this supernatural thriller, which should move Koontz a notch closer to Stephen King's high-rent district." (Publishers Weekly)

    "Great Book!"

I loved this book. After recently reading a Koontz book which was almost too awful to finish, i was worried about this one, but found it to be wonderful. I fell in love with the dog, and felt like Nora and Travis were friends of mine. I was so wrapped up in this book that i found myself finding reasons to drive so that i could have an opportunity to listen. And if you ask any of my family, they'll tell you "Keep it down so Mommie can hear the book..." I truly enjoyed it and was almost sad when the adventure ended.

I would (and have) recommend this book to anyone who loves a good story, great characters, and lots of plot twists and turns.

    "A Great Guys Read"

Dean again writes a wonderful story for guys. It has all 5 of the necessary parts to make it great.
    1. A guy with an Issue.
    2. The Dog.
    3. A Gun
    4. A Creature to use the Gun on
    5. A HOTTIE to protect.
What more could you ask for, suspence, action, it's all there. Read this book, you will love it as I did.

    "Great read/listen"

I first read 'Watchers' some 20 years ago. It has always been one of my favorites, and listening to it has been like reuniting with an old friend. Well narrated, with great characters (especially Einstein!), this is Koontz at his best.

    "Great book; so-so narrator"

The book itself was great; Mr. Koontz obviously loves dogs and understands people who love dogs. The story had a lot of suspense but wasn't too scary to listen to alone in the sewing room at night.
My only issue was the old-school narrator. This recording was made in 1987, and the narration sounds decidedly old-fashioned compared to newer recordings. His tone is very "storyteller", and his character voices can edge dangerously close to cartoony. Several well-written passages sound sillier than they ought to because of his inflection and emphasis. If I weren't a veteran audiobook listener who'd learned to let the narrator grow on me, I would have been instantly put off.
Not for newcomers to the format, I'd say.

    "Creepy trip down memory lane!"

I read this book about 20 years ago and loved it then. When I listened on Audible, it was every bit as entertaining and scary as I remember, but more like watching a movie! In fact, it should BE a movie! Dean Koontz has a comic side to his horror writing that other writers of this genre don't have. Just when the goosebumps are starting to form, he makes you laugh. And the reader is wonderful. I recommend this book even if you recall reading it long ago as I did.

    "Great story; terrible narration"

Watchers is one of the first Koontz books I ever read, so recently I decided to pick it up as an audiobook. Now, I really wish Audible had a return policy. The story holds up just as I remember, however the narration sounds like one of those awful speech-to-text books that were popular so many years ago. I'd suggest passing on this version, and picking up the book instead.

An old but timeless tale (25 years old!) . Loved it. Will try other Koontz novels.

    "Great book/Terrible Narrator"

I love the book and have read it several times. The audio book of course is good but would be much better with a different narrator. This guy mispronounces several easy words and it's very annoying.

All in all, it's definitely a great story and worth the listen.

    "I loved it!"

It takes a gifted author to come up with a suspense novel that is both scary and charming, but Dean Koontz has accomplished this and more in this wonderful story of monsters and heros and good people and bad guys and a lovable dog. This is one of those books that you rush to read (or listen to) and then when you've devoured it, you're sorry it's over. And I don't think I'll look at my not-too-smart miniature dachshund, Lena, in the same way ever again.

    "Sci-Fi that's scary & unusual & possible?"

The Government has bred 2 animals for strength, speed, intelligence and the need to kill one another. A single girl is being stalked by a nasty repairman who duplicates the key to her house. A man is going for a walk thru the woods and is stopped by a dog with unusually high mentality. The 3 meet, join together, and try to outrun the other creature who always seems to find them. Kept me up reading. Beginning was a little slow til they get the stalker out of the way.
