Publisher's Summary

New York Times best-selling author Robin Cook returns with another ripped-from-the-headlines medical thriller, where DNA science, biotechnology, and religion collide.

It's been more than thirty years since New York City medical examiner Jack Stapleton's college graduation and almost as long since he'd been in touch with former classmates Shawn Doherty and Kevin Murray. Once a highly regarded ophthalmologist, Jack's career took a dramatic turn after a tragic accident that destroyed his family. But that, too, is very much in the past: Jack has remarried - to longtime colleague and fellow medical examiner Laurie Montgomery - and is the father of a young child. But his renegade, activist personality can't rest, and after performing a postmortem on a young college student who had recently been treated by a chiropractor, Jack decides to explore alternative medicine. What makes some people step outside the medical establishment to seek care from practitioners of Eastern philosophies and even faith healers?

Jack's classmate Shawn Doherty is now a renowned archeologist and biblical scholar at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, whose taste for good wine and generally deteriorating health are taking a toll on his career. He has recently obtained permission for a final dig beneath Saint Peter's, and despite his long-standing grudge against the Catholic Church, begins his research - which eventually takes him to Jerusalem and Venice - only to make a startling discovery with ecclesiastical and medical implications. And when Kevin Murray, now Bishop of the Archdiocese of New York, gets wind of Shawn's findings, he's desperate to keep them from the public. Kevin has strong political ambitions within the Church, but his association with Shawn threatens to undermine them. Kevin turns to his old friend Jack to help protect an explosive secret - one with the power to change lives forever.

    "Intervention"

By far the worst Robin Cook book I have read. I kept waiting for the storylines to somehow connect but they never really do. Also, the ending made no sense at all. None of the issues were resolved. A wasted Credit!

"Not the same Robin Cook I once knew"

Cook can still pace a narrative to keep you listening even as you realize it is more and more implausible and absurd. He clearly is using it at least in part as a polemic against alternative medicine--he is particularly scathing about chiropractic. His message about the Catholic Church is also mixed and bizarre. The plot is strange and disjointed, and I don't think I remember ever reading a hastier and more slapped together and implausible ending. I kept going, because it was Robin Cook and moments were interesting, but the overall effect was deeply disappointing . . . .

    "An okay listen"

Great narration as always from Guidall, but this book wasn't as good as some of Cook's other books. I thought the biblical details were distracting and not particularly interesting (and I majored in Religion!). It seemed a little Dan Brown-ish, but not in a good way. My attention definitely waned a bit in the middle of this one, though the story picked up when Cook brought the two stories together, about 3/4 of the way through. ,

    ""Intervention" needs an intervention"

I cross between an "Angels & Demons" wanna be and a "CSI Miami", this book was just one long diatribe on research. The author would concoct reasons to have a dialogue between to characters for the sole purpose of telling the whole story. A good portion of the book dealt with his dislike for the field of Chiropractics with a good dose of Roman Catholic lore mixed in. I was dissapointed to say the least.

    "ROBIN COOK'S WORST"

So bad I took the time too find out his age thinking he's gone around the bend. Maybe a cheap ghostwriter? Not what one would expect from the #1 medical thriller writer. This is the last Robin Cook for me.

"By far the WORST book I have read in years"

At least 3 divergent sub plots, and not a single plotline in the book is resolved. Excessive explanations of technical issues, weak relationships between characters. Wierd sexual scenes that approach bizarre. Constant tension in a very negative way, several of the characters are very unhappy and close to bitter. There is no way that anyone would buy this book if it did not have an author who once wrote a good book. Robin Cook should be ashamed, and Audible should seriously consider refunding the credit for those who bought it. I kept listening hoping it would improve, otherwise I would have dumped it sooner. PURE GARBAGE!!!!

"Worst book I've aquired from audible"

I have over 300 books in my audible library. There are only two that I didn't finish. I wish this had been the third. There were several (odd) different story lines that barely intersected, and there was no ending to speak of. Wish I could have that credit back...

    "Couldn't put it down."

This was one of the most riveting books I've read in a long time. It was a real page turner. I presume some of the religious fanatics will be offended by it, just like they were with the Davinci Code, but that is fiction. The writing was excellent and the narrator did his usual good job. It really captured my attention until about 90% of the way through and then just fell apart. I swear, publishers must pressure writers to finish a book "or else". The last 10% of the book just "died" The ending was a Major Disappointment! For Robin Cook it was a real surprise. However, with that being said, it is definitely worth the time and credit to read.

"Robin Cook as always keeps you THERE."
What made the experience of listening to Intervention the most enjoyable?

The suspense of what would happen to the child.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The medical examiner, who's thoughts about alternative medicine seem to be changing or not.

What about George Guidall’s performance did you like?

GG's voice changed with each character, so you knew immediately who was talking.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Absolutely!

    Any additional comments?

what happened to part 3? it's like an Alfred Hitchcock story - Audio says look for the next part, but it isn't there.....
I want to know who the phone call was from, etc....
