Like The Shell Seekers, Coming Home is an intensely personal story. Like September, it teems with marvelous, memorable characters. Coming Home is a story to be savored, an old-fashioned tale hardly anyone knows how to tell anymore. In telling the story of Judith Dunbar and her loved ones, Rosamunde Pilcher describes each family member with warmth, wisdom and clear-eyed insight. Coming Home is a totally involving story of a young woman's coming of age, coming to terms with both love and sadness, and, in every sense of the word, Coming Home.

"Good News, Bad News"
I wish I could have downloaded an unabridged version of this novel. I have read the book, and this abridgement omits many details that substantially enrich the story. On the other hand, Ms. Redgrave does a very fine job as narrator; she creates distinctive voices for the characters--one almost forgets that one woman is doing all the parts. My final criticism of this recording is of the absurd, very intermittent background music. It is unnecessary and distracting.

"Whose bright idea was it to add background music?"
As abridged versions of books go Coming Home was pretty good except for the awful tinny background music. I think it was meant to set a mood but all it did for me was to set my teeth on edge. I would have happily spent more for an unabridged version as this was the best book Pilcher wrote.

"Too Short!"
My own fault, but didn't realize this was an abridged edition and had read the book many years ago, so was very disappointed that some of the best parts of the book were ommitted. I wish Ms. Pilcher had written more about the Brits in the Orient during the beginning of WWII.
"Coming Home"
Anything this author writes is good. She has a way of making you love her characters no matter who they are. This is no exception.
"What???? I bought the abridged version????"
Yes, I LOVE this book!!!
I wouldn't have bought the abridged version!!
The ending is awesome!!
Yes. It should have been longer.
I was so sad that it was less than half the book!!
"Coming Home"
While Lynn Redgrave reads the book well, the novel is abridged. I loved the book version, so I was quite disappointed that I didn't notice this audio version was not unabridged. There are many gaps in the story, as a result, leaving one quite dizzy as the story speeds along. Abridged versions never allow much scope for character development, so I shall examine the descriptions of the books carefully from now on. The other annoying feature of this audio version is the addition of music, which is played in parts of the story while Redgrave reads. What were they thinking of, to add this awful feature? I found myself cringing as this tinny music suddenly, and for no apparent reason, almost drowned out the narrator's voice.
"Poor quaility"
I would recommend this story to anyone - but preface the fact that the quality of the recording is terrible. I'm glad that I read the book years ago.
All of the Pilcher stories are wonderful - and this saga about a girl living in England before, during and after World War II is quite engaging. You feel like you get to know Judith and the others in the story.
I loved Lynn Redgrave's performance -- she reads other Pilcher stories and is really
Absolutely.
"wonderful story - roasmunde pitcher always great"
Yes I will. I will read it several times.
Rosamunde Pilcher is always a winner - all of her books are most enjoyable.
I would read any of her books and know it has to be good - it is always is
If you enjoy a good book that is nothing but enjoyable then this one you will love.
No tragedy or distress - just an excellent read.
"Pilcher should be on every shelf!"
One of the best writers of the past fifty years - Pilcher brings insight and wit to so-called ordinary lives and resonates with her readers to an extraordinary degree. We need more Pilcher!
