What the Critics Say

"One would expect the son of Mel Brooks to have a genetic predisposition to humor, and indeed, he does, and he exhibits it relentlessly here." (Publishers Weekly)

    "I am now Zombie Proof"

Written much like a survival guide, this book gives instruction for eveything from a Zombie attack to Zombie's underwater, the best way to stop a Zombie, and how to avoid Zombie's altogether. I listened to this book on a very drive at night, I found myself really listening as if a Zombie were going to try to attack me at a rest stop! Never losing its seriousness, this book is an odd one. I liked it and still think of Zombie's showing up on the beach.

    "Amusing, but still terrifying"

This is a pretty good book to listen to you if you want some fictional info-tainment on zombies. The content is humorous, but it still inspires a feeling of panic and terror if such a thing were to actually happen. The first hour was lackluster, when it's describing the origins and physiology of zombies. However, it suprisingly gains momentum when it gets to the section on weapons, defense, terrain, etc... Though it's meant to be purely fictional, the ideas presented can still be used in other massive-disaster scenarios. The information is still useful even though it's centered around a zombie outbreak.

I'd definately recommend this if you enjoyed World War Z. In addition, a good half of the book is similar to World War Z, as it tells the stories of survivors, but not as gripping and with as much detail as said book. It's done in a historical-drama, following zombie outbreaks from the 50,000 BC, ancient Rome, imperial China, all the way to the present, and how people in those time era and places thought of the zombies and how they fought them.

It's ripe with intelligent, though fictional, tips and strategies. Not anyone could have just written this book. I really enjoyed it.

"Interesting topic, but not a good audiobook."

I'm a big fan of anything zombie/zombie survival, so I really enjoyed the content of the book, but the whole 'guide' genre doesn't really lend itself to audiobook format.

Skip this one and get World War Z by Max Brooks instead.

    "Maybe a bit long"

This was my first pick from Audible, and I did enjoy it. I am a zombie fan, but over eight hours of audio on this topic in this manner is a little much. That could be because the narrator sounds like he is just reading a manual, not much inflection in his voice, causing me to drift at times. While getting lost in this book, I did start to feel that I may actually be in a zombie attack. Jam packed of entertaining info on a zombie invasion. A good one time listen, and it will be a great tool to help me get to sleep ensuring interesting dreams.

    "Great book but"

the narrator was not that great. He wasn't terrible but there wasn't much life or variation in his voice and it seemed to be slightly off in pitch. Granted this is what it says it is a manual, sure its about surviving a hypothetical and wholly fictional zombie apocalypse but the narrator is still quite dry. Nonetheless if you're a zombie fan its right up your ally and I highly recommend it.

"Very entertaining...for when the DEAD walk again!"
If you could sum up The Zombie Survival Guide in three words, what would they be?

It would be "are you serious?" I love a good zombie game, movie or story; but, I can't tell if this guy is serious.

Who was your favorite character and why?

This is not applicable, but I was imagining one while listening. I don't know if that counts.

Have you listened to any of Marc Cashman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I haven't, this book is just stating information, so I don't know if I was able to experience his full potential. He was a very good reader.

If you could rename The Zombie Survival Guide, what would you call it?

    "Zombie-Proofing for Dummies"

    "Not meant for Audio"
What disappointed you about The Zombie Survival Guide?

I had meant to pick this one up for a while now, but when I eventually got the audio version, I couldn't even finish it. Its dry and slow. I have to say that the print version is much better given that is is full of pictures and diagrams to explain whats going on. Audio versions is missing half the fun of the read. Really best delivered in a visual format.

Would you ever listen to anything by Max Brooks again?

    Absolutely!

Would you be willing to try another one of Marc Cashman’s performances?

Sure would, it was not so much the narrators performance that got me turned off to the audio version of this book.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Boredom

"Fun. Entertaining... but gets kinda repetitive."
What did you like best about The Zombie Survival Guide? What did you like least?

+ Very intriguing for the first half or so. Lots of good "advice" and info on the inevitable zombie threat.

    - Joke kinda gets old half way or so through...

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Zombie Survival Guide?

I didn't know that zombies walked normally under water as if it were not much of a problem...

What three words best describe Marc Cashman’s performance?

    Scientific. Nerdy. Textbook.

Did The Zombie Survival Guide inspire you to do anything?

    Prepare....

    Any additional comments?

Fun for the first half, gets stale.
