Publisher's Summary

The unhappy inhabitants of planet Krikkit are sick of looking at the night sky above their heads, so they plan to destroy it. The universe, that is. Now only five individuals stand between the white killer robots of Krikkit and their goal of total annihilation.

They are Arthur Dent, a mild-mannered space and time traveler, who tries to learn how to fly by throwing himself at the ground and missing; Ford Prefect, his best friend, who decides to go insane to see if he likes it; Slartibartfast, the indomitable vice president of the Campaign for Real Time, who travels in a ship powered by irrational behavior; Zaphod Beeblebrox, the two-headed, three-armed ex-head honcho of the Universe; and Trillian, the sexy space cadet who is torn between a persistent Thunder God and a very depressed Beeblebrox.

How will it all end? Will it end? Only this stalwart crew knows as they try to avert "universal" Armageddon and save life as we know it, and don't know it!

Listen to the rest of Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy "trilogy".

What the Critics Say

"Adams is one of those rare treasures: an author who, one senses, has as much fun writing as one has reading." (The Arizona Daily Star)

"It's my favorite of the series"

This book started out as meast least favorite of the series, but has grown on me ever since. It's now my favorite and, in my opinion, is Adams' most creative Hitchhiker book. Martin Freeman is a top rate narrator. He is much more versatile in his voice acting than I would have thought, has unique voices for each character, and is highly entertaining. I highly recommend this book, or any of this series.

"A very fun read if you're hooked on the series"
Would you listen to Life, the Universe, and Everything again? Why?

I see myself listening to this book again, mainly because it's very funny. "Haha" funny, not funny like a funny smell. Also, I'm pretty sure I've missed a few details here and there while giggling.

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favorite character was a speck of dust on one of the baseball bats. It stood out because it reappeared every time Arthur was looking away. I think it was Marvin's fault.

What about Martin Freeman’s performance did you like?

Martin Freeman was probably the best pick to read this series with, perhaps, the exception of that famous radio news presenter from Han Wavel.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I actually almost did! I started listening to the book on a Saturday morning, and I kept listening through while doing chores around the house. I ended up doing more chores than planned, and I think I accidentally cleaned someone else's spaceship. And ever since, I can't imagine why, my fridge no longer needs electricity: I just need to feed it some restaurant bills.

    Any additional comments?

This book is definitely the opposite of belgium. (Not the country.)

    "Martin Freeman is perfect!"
Would you listen to Life, the Universe, and Everything again? Why?

I could listen to Martin Freeman read this 100 times and never get tired of it!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Marvin is my favorite character because he is just so pathetic. I also like The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy if you can consider it a character, which I do.

What does Martin Freeman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Everything. The various voices, the sarcastic tone. He truly brings the books to life and I think Douglas Adams would love his narration.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Douglas Adams always makes me laugh. For absurdity if nothing else.

    Any additional comments?

It's a great book with a fantastic narration. Everyone should get it.

"Disappointing Narration, I miss Douglas Adams"

Martin Freeman simply does not match up to Douglas Adam's original performance. I grew up listening to these books on tape (yes, back when it was a cassette) and I bought this digital copy thinking it was the classic rendition.

Freeman is mostly over the top and simply does not have the comedic timing necessary to pull off this narration. If they really insist on rerecording it, I would have greatly preferred Stephen Fry, but for my money Douglas Adams is darn near impossible to beat.

Don't get me wrong, I love this book...but if you can track down the old recordings, it will be well worth the effort (no, I'm not talking about the radio program...though while you are at it, feel free to track those down too!)

    "Life the Universe and Everything."
What made the experience of listening to Life, the Universe, and Everything the most enjoyable?

You will have to listen to the hal story, but after all the books you get a perfect picture of Duglas Adams world for Arthur, Ford, Trisha and Zhafod. And the story is lovely ans should be read ore listend to.

What other book might you compare Life, the Universe, and Everything to and why?

Book1 Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxies, book 2, restaurant at the end of the world, book 4 So long and thanks for all the fish and book 5 Mostly harmless. The books are all collected.

Have you listened to any of Martin Freeman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Well I love his voice, but his impression of Zahfod is a bit erm.. lets just say disappointing.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If I could have the time I would love to listen to in one setting.

    Any additional comments?

As a free thinking person this book series is lovely.

    "Best of a great series"

Every book in the Hitchhiker's series is a delight, and all go at least a bit beyond. This is the one that has really stuck with me. The parable of the people of Krikkit has real depth: I find myself coming back to it constantly as something that helps me understand why good people do bad things.

And, did I mention, it's a blast, just pure fun. Freeman is great as always.

    "Just Can't Get Enough!"
What made the experience of listening to Life, the Universe, and Everything the most enjoyable?

I love all of Douglas Adams' books, and this one kept the story going without being tedious like some sequels are.

    Which scene was your favorite?

I loved when Trillian hugged the Cricketer.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    I laughed!

"Douglas Adams/Martin Freeman do it again"
If you could sum up Life, the Universe, and Everything in three words, what would they be?

    Very well done

What did you like best about this story?

I like the variety of characters the best.

    Which scene was your favorite?

My favorite scene is where Arthur Dent finally learns to fly.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I was particularly moved in the scene where Marvin, the manic depressive robot has an in depth discussion with a mattress in a swamp.

    Any additional comments?

Martin Freeman does a brilliant job in performing the many different voices for the many different personalities of the very diverse characters and amazingly brings them to life as the reader listens.

The five stars could have been for the narration alone. Overall a great story not the best one in the series but well worth a read/listen.
