In 2003, a three-year-old with the unlikely name of Funny Cide became "the people's horse", the unheralded New York-bred gelding who, in a time of war and economic jitters, inspired a nation by knocking off the champions and their millionaire owners and sweeping to the brink of the Triple Crown.
Trained by a journeyman who'd spent over 30 years looking for "the one", ridden by a jockey fighting to come back after years of injuries and hard knocks, and owned by a band of high school buddies from Sackets Harbor, N.Y., Funny Cide became a hero and media sensation.
Now, Sally Jenkins, award-winning co-author of Lance Armstrong's #1 best seller It's Not About the Bike, tells the inside story of the Funny Cide team's ups and downs against overwhelming odds, illness, and even scandal, to capture the imagination of millions. It's a new American classic for the underdog in all of us.

Underdogs
Funny Cide, because he realized his role in it all.
I liked his performance, but whoever engineered the recording needs to pay more attention to his recording levels. It got quiet and then loud, and loud is better. I have 92 acres to mow and I listen while I'm mowing. I can always turn it down, but I had it all the way up and sometimes I couldn't hear it, then the level would change and it took my ears off.
I have 6 horses, so I love an underdog hero horse story.
This has caused me to want to finish my book, " For The Love Of A Horse".
"Heartwarming story"
I really, really enjoyed this book. The story will give you goosebumps and pull at all of your emotions. It's probably not the best book to listen to if there are people around b/c you might end up hooping and hollaring during the racing scenes (I know I was rooting right along). The narrator isn't the best, he doesn't have much range in his voice, but after a short while you won't mind a bit. The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars was b/c of the story itself, there were a couple of times at the beginning that it went into long descriptions of the back stories of the people involved and I wanted it to focus on the horse. But stick through that part and you'll end up wrapped up in Funny's story and his antics. Truly a story to make you smile when you listen.
"Well researched & thoughtful"
One of the best sports stories of late - beautifully written - conveying the highs & heartbreaks of the Thoroughbred world.
