Publisher's Summary

Michael must save his mother - and protect his powers - in the electric sequel to the number-one New York Times best-selling Michael Vey, from Richard Paul Evans.

Michael was born with special electrical powers - and he’s not the only one. His friend Taylor has them too, and so do other kids around the world. With Michael’s friend Ostin, a techno-genius, they form the Electroclan, an alliance meant to protect them from a powerful group, the growing Order of Elgen, who are out to destroy them. The leader of the Elgen, Dr. Hatch, has kidnapped Michael’s mother, and time is running out.

After narrowly escaping an Elgen trap, Ostin’s discovery of bizarre “rat fires” in South America leads the gang to the jungles of Peru, where the Electroclan meets new, powerful foes and faces their greatest challenge yet as Michael learns the extent of the Elgen’s rise in power - and the truth of their plan to “restructure” the world.

    "Good Series for Boys"

Michael and clan pick up where the first left off, on the run to save his mother and stop the Elgen plan from "Hatching". The romance between Michael and Taylor is more in the background, yet other characters are fleshed out more creating new interest.

This series is a mixture of Firestarter (Stephen King) meets Percy Jackson. Excellent series for boys grades 4-12. Enjoy!

What did you love best about Rise of the Elgen?

This continues the story from the first book. Swiftly paced, it covers a lot of ground with a few good surprises.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Michael Vey exemplifies the virtues and strengths of a hero.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, this story moves from danger to danger and held my interest. Sometimes I had to take a break because the antagonist speaks with such oily propaganda I had to shake it off before I could continue.

What did you love best about Rise of the Elgen?

I liked the alternating points of view and the characters. I really liked Michael and Simon and Taylor a lot in the first book, and while I still enjoyed them in this one, I wasn't quite as invested as I was the first time around.

What other book might you compare Rise of the Elgen to and why?

The Rise of Elgen wasn't like any other book that I have read. Parts were a little gory/gross. Don't want to give too much away, but there are some large rats and some nasty stuff happens with them.

What about Fred Berman’s performance did you like?

The narrator is good. I think he does well with the boy's/men's voices. Like most male narrators, I am not all that impressed with his women's voices but it doesn't take anything away from the book.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. I loved the first book and stayed up late to listen to it. This one wasn't quite that good, but I still listened to the entire book in one day!

    Any additional comments?

While some stuff was resolved in this book, the ending was a cliffhanger. You don't find out who is helping? Michael and his friends and why. The cliffhanger at the end was good, and it made up for some of the slower parts of the book. The alternating points of view also made the book move faster than it might have otherwise. All-in-all a good sequel to the first and I am looking forward to the third book in the series!

"Evans and Berman continue an excellent story!"
Where does Rise of the Elgen rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Some audiobook narrators are difficult to listen to. Berman's performance brings this story to life. After both reading and hearing the first Vey book, I recommend listening to this over reading it. It's just so fun to hear!

What other book might you compare Rise of the Elgen to and why?

Might compare to Harry Potter, or I Am Number Four. Sci-Fi brought closer to home.

    Any additional comments?

What comes next? Waiting for it!

    Any additional comments?

Fun for the whole family! My preteen children and my teenagers alike loved both Michael Vey books. And yes, even though its a kid's story I have to admit I enjoyed it too. The characters are well developed and the plot is intense with a lot of action. I should mention that the narrator did an excellent job, and was easy to listen to.

My kids keep asking if the next book in the series has been published. We hope it will be soon!

    "Exciting but less believable"
Would you listen to Rise of the Elgen again? Why?

No. This book was not as wonderful as the first in the series. It had a little too much gore for my taste. The characters were well developed but when their powers became even greater than they had been in the first book, it made my logical mind wonder how their body, especially Michael's, could survive the extra burden of the power surges. I'll have to say that the narration was amazing. The way the voices would change and the tone would change, made it a really exciting listen.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I think that the descriptions were a little too vivid when the rats were devouring their meal. I guess I would have tried to figure out a way to leave more to the imagination. I also was shocked at the ending and would have liked to have this be the last in the series, but I can see that it won't be.

What does Fred Berman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He knew exactly how to use inflection and accents to distinguish between characters and to convey the mood of the story. Excellent narration!!!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Pretty much. We listened to it while traveling and got through it in two long sittings. I looked forward to the second day.

"Great addition to the series. (Possible Spoiler)"

I loved the first book and the second book is just as good. The story is quick and fun and suspenseful. I laughed out loud more than once. Austin and Max are hysterical. I really enjoyed the book. I hate cliff hanger endings. Hopefully Mr. Evans won't make us wait too long for book 3.

What did you love best about Rise of the Elgen?

    Good, solid story. Moves fast!

What does Fred Berman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He does about 20 different voices, so well, and so seamlessly that you forget its one person doing it!

    Any additional comments?

    Great fun!

If you could sum up Rise of the Elgen in three words, what would they be?

This is far better than the Twilight. For one they have character developments that are believable and more than just a love story.

This book is a part 2. I recommend reading the other one first.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There are many quirks about this book that are very enjoyable.
