The Burning Bridge: Ranger's Apprentice, Book 2

Exhilarating. Compelling characters.

Horace does something unexpected near the end. Don't want to spoil it!

His narration is just amazing. The characters come to life, as well as the humor and poignancy. Halt and Gilan are especially good. I'd never heard this narrator before this series, and now I'm looking for his work.

The ending. Again, don't want to spoil anything. If you enjoy the relationship between Halt and Will, it is very meaningful.

I thought this was even better than the original, and was not a formula sequel at all. The relationships between the characters are so well done in the writing and in the narration, especially Halt, Gilan, Will and Horace, but also Alyss as well.

I like the voice of this reader, it seems to fit the story. Now I need the next book.

Book #2 of the series. I loved #1, The Ruins of Gorlan. Took a real interest in the young boys and the "careers" they would follow.
Book #2 has their careers decided and now how they are handling them. Unfortunately, this book is just about a lot of battles. I have no interest in war.
Didn't bother finishing.

Rewrite burning bridge scene and change who is sent to carry the message.

Ranger's Apprentice, Book 1, is 5 Stars and compelling even if the ending is a little weak.
Book 2 has implausible character behavior. It's as if Flanagan wanted a boy ranger and princess to be captured but didn't think out the plot sequence especially at the crucial turning points.
A apprentice knight of proven courage fails to take the risk crossing a bridge.. A ranger skilled in wood's lore, tries to relight a fire from scratch rather than just grabbing a burning brand.

The characters behavior is inconsistent with that of book 1.

I recommend this book esp to families with preteens. It shows a young person starting road to development. His hesitation, then decisions are made logically with emotions and doubt coloring decisions.

He read the narrated the story excellently. It was easy to follow the story. He added the tension at the right spots.

I did not plan on listening at one sitting but....John Keatings voice kept me listening.

This is book 2 of series. I got it first then was motivated to get books 1 & 3 which led to me getting entire series.

After listening to Harry Potter, it is hard for anyone to live up to Jim Dale, but this reader does not hold my attention. Aside from that, it is a good family book to listen to together if your kids really like books on tape like mine do.

I we extremely disappointed in Burning Bridge. I can set aside disbelief for mythical creatures and strange powers. But it is difficult to remain involved in a story where the characters just behave stupidly. I can't explain without spoilers ... but its really not worth the time to find out what I mean.

I enjoyed the first book and like the characters. I hope the third book is better.

well I have the printed version as well and the audio is true to the print it was vary vary well performed.the performance took a great book and made it better its unbelievable.wonderful

I liked all the ranger series I started getting the audio books at the library then I found I could not get them all. so I came here for the remainder. I usually read the books then listen but this one I did the opposit. truely enjoyed the audio and reading the books so much so I bought the whole series to send to my father who is avid reader. I am tring to get him listening to the audio books but he set in his ways and wont even try it. I will send him the books but these are books that anyone from the youngest to the oldest can enjoy and I listen to them with my grandson, hes 5 and he was really into them especially the one with the boat ride. I was amazed at how much of the story he was picking up.The performance even captured his attention as well as mine and My husband. Now My father I truly will get him to listen because this performance really adds to the book and makes it better. I believe if I had read it first I would not have enjoyed it quite as much. not to put the book down as it is vary well written.

Flanagan does it again in this tidy little continuation to his Ranger's Apprentice sequence, begun in The Ruins of Gorlan. Once again, the need to get information back to the king leaves the young Ranger apprentice Will and his companions Horace, and a lady's maid named Evanlyn alone in their attempts to save the country of Aranluan from the deadly plans of Morgarath.

The final question, as always in a sequence of this energy and excitement: what will happen to Will next?

The Ranger's Apprentice sequence is a wonderful example of the best type of Apprentice stories - both grounded in adventure and also the ordinary details of practice and learning necessary to become masterful at a given craft. Readers who enjoy Flanagan may also enjoy the Spook's Apprentice series and the Skullduggery Pleasant books.
