"more great action"
If you liked the first book, as I did, you'll enjoy this one more.
I do have to agree with a reviewer of the first book who likened the story to that of a comic book. Toward the end of the book the characters took on the persona of super heroes able to leap tall buildings. I my mind's eye I could see the comic book 'smash' and 'crack!' verbiage hovering over fantastically drawn characters. Both the protagonists and antagonists say things to each other that could only be taken seriously in a high action book like this one.
NONETHELESS, I loved this book and cannot wait for the 3rd! I like the main character immensely and am eager to see how he handles his next adventure.
I like Jack Reacher style characters regardless of setting. Put them in outer space, in modern America, in a military setting, on an alien planet... no worries. Book has non moralistic vigilante-justice? Sign me up! (oh, I read urban fantasy, soft and hard sci-fi, trashy vampire and zombie novels too)
"A satisfying story..."
I really like the story, and the suspense, and most of the characters and their relationships... that being said... Eline bugged me with her holier-than-thou attitude and her "love" that was contingent on Kylar changing his behavior to match what she thought he should be.
There were a lot more "character development" scenes in this book than in the first - i.e there were chapters dedicated to Eline's moralizing, Vi's life, and Dorion's insanity. Oh, and Kylar's moping about how he has to choose between "love" and everything else he knows and wants.
Once I skimmed through these long passages at the start of the book, however, the story kept me reading. So many things that I wanted resolved: the GodKing, the Night Angel, the witches, Vi, Logan... actually, I liked every plot thread except the very long segment where Kylar passed time trying to be a house-husband. Once this section ended, however, the story carried on without further delays and ended up being very suspenseful.
Overall, it's a satisfying story - full of angst, judgement, retribution and justice... the narration is very good and the story doesn't leave you hanging at the end, even though there's another book in the trilogy.
"excellent story"
My 18 yr old son got the entire trilogy at the local bookstore and offered it to me to read first. I read the first book and was immediately hooked! I ended up giving him back the books when I discovered them here. Being a truckdriver, it was more convenient for me to listen to them rather than reading the books. I highly recommend this trilogy. It is a wonderful example of how an author can flesh out his characters and put them in situations where they must decide between doing what it is right and doing what they think is right. I loved this trilogy to the very last word.
"Not his best, and NOT a great reader!"
I really enjoyed the Prism series, can't wait for the next book ... but I read them myself and didn't listen to them. I'm finding the Night Angel books to be confusing and not terribly well written. Although, the reader is abysmal - reading in an over-dramatic style that is annoying and doesn't help to clarify anything. He's tolerable once you get used to it, but it is a constant effort to ignore how annoying I find his reading style.
Though his voice is clear and he enunciates well, his style is very overblown - reading even the most simple passages with huge portent. Annoying.
"Keeps getting better"
I have stepped away from printed versions of a book. The reason is that I enjoy the narrators that much. The performance and story mix to give me my entertainment.
I have cut the cable cord and now find my entertainment in audio books. That is why when you read my reviews I can be very hard on a narrator. My expectations are high and I will abandon a book if the narration irritates me.
As to this book, Paul Boehmer is one of my favorite narrators. The sound quality is great, unlike some earlier recordings from Audible's early days.
Since I bought all three books I remember them as the whole story. There were few if any lulls in the action. I thought there was a great blend between the romantic drives in the story and the action of battle.
The author did a great job in showing the consequences of decisions and that not every action is right or wrong, but can create a different outcome.
The second book is a great continuation and made me want to get the third book as soon as possible.
"Weeks delivers a knockout"
Continuing on where he left off with “The Way of Shadows” the transition is seamless. “Shadow’s Edge” packs everything and more, and will leave you ready to dive into the final book. The book is action packed with that touch of humor, and the, no so over the top, romance is all found here. With the addition of epic battles and a few unseen twists this will definitely satisfy anybody who enjoyed the first book.
My only suggestion is to stop waiting and dive in!
"The second of a good trilogy."
Brent Weeks has done really well with the second book in this series. The characters continue to pull you in and make you care what happens to them. The narrator does not detract from the story instead helps pull you into the world. I will say that the situations and language are not fit for your kids so if you are easily offended I would stay away. This is not to say that the book is riddled with objectionable material, it is not. I would recommend it whole heartedly.
"Continues very good first book."
Shadow's Edge continues the Night Angel Trilogy, and if you liked the first book, you will like this one. The story of Azoth continues as he becomes a full fledged assassin, and falls in love. Shadow's Edge doesn't fall into the boring middle book trap that happens to some trilogys. The story is good, and so is the narration. There are some surprising plot twists at the end as well.
"Vast Improvement"
This book was a pleasant surprise. I tried to like book one. It showed a lot of promise but left me unfulfilled on several levels, but I saw hints of the story to come. This book was worth the wait. The story flowed better, the narration was better and I am now really looking forward to book 3 which is downloading as I write this.
Disciple of the written word and Audible fanatic. I am an Urban and Epic Fantasy Fan. I also enjoy some Paranormal Romance.
"Very Good"
Unlike many second books that just seem to be place holders for the third book Shadow's Edge is a very good book on it's own. I believe that I will enjoy his third book as well as the first and second because of the way in which he has set up his characters. I do not want this review to have any spoilers but, I will say that I am becoming intrigued by the emerging societies and characters Brent Weeks is creating. I am a huge Robert Jordan fan and not since his first two books have I found a series that such potential to last in the heart and imagination. There are a few parts that I found slightly confusing but am hoping will be clarified as time moves on. All in all I say keep writing Mr. Weeks I want to know more. Paul Boehmer is a talented narrator. At first I was skeptical about his voice, but as I listened his voice faded into the story and brought the characters to life. That is my favorite kind of narrator. If you can make me see the story instead of hearing your voice I believe you have done your job superbly and Mr. Boehmer accomplished this beautifully.
