Publisher's Summary

The extraordinary new novel in the number-one New York Times best-selling series.

A Japanese cargo ship cruises the eastern Atlantic near the Azores- when it bursts into flames. A gang of pirates speeds to take advantage of the disaster - when their boat explodes. What is happening in that part of the world? As Kurt Austin, Joe Zavala, and the rest of the NUMA(r) Special Assignments Team rush to investigate, they find themselves drawn into the extraordinary ambitions of an African dictator, the creation of a weapon of almost mythical power, and an unimaginably audacious plan to extort the world's major nations. Their penalty for refusal? The destruction of their greatest cities.

Filled with the high-stakes suspense and boundless invention unique to Cussler, Devil's Gate is one of the most thrilling novels yet from the grand master of adventure.

    "Another five star!"
Would you listen to Devil's Gate again? Why?

Definitely Yes. Story had many characters, much action, good plot development. Much back and forth between scenes / characters. Found myself "rewinding" to make sure I hadn't missed anything. Would eagerly listen to this book again now that I better understand the twists and turns in the plot. Could now listen continuously without having to occasionally "rewind."

What other book might you compare Devil's Gate to and why?

Almost all of CC's books utilize a similar type of flash from one scene to another. Several characters appear in CC's books. Each set of characters has a small subplot related to the major plot.

What does Scott Brick bring to the story that you wouldn???t experience if you just read the book?

Scott Brick is phenomenal in his portrayal of male, female, and foreign dialect voices. No problem ever identifying what role he is playing at any given moment.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The dramatic escape from the minisub and the utilization of the robot Rapunzel in this escape.

    Any additional comments?

I NEVER hesitate to burn a credit for a CC book narrated by Scott Brick. I've NEVER been disappointed. Five star in all categories!!

    "Awesome...."
What does Scott Brick bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Scott has a voice that has been tuned to the same frequency as Cussler... he has read a number of them, and now when I hear one he did not read, it takes me a while to start enjoying it..... Cussler and Brick, a number one combo!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    yes

    "My style of story"

This book was exactly for my taste. Fast paced with lot of adventures. Strong characters. Cool mass destruction weapon, which was destructed by the end, of course. I don't know why I haven't read Cussler novels before, but I definitely will.

    "Good story"
Would you consider the audio edition of Devil's Gate to be better than the print version?

Cannot say, as I didn't read the printed version.

What did you like best about this story?

Kurt Austin is a strong character as he usually is, but the Trout's are well characterized and an integral part of the story.

What does Scott Brick bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Scott keeps the pace well and portrayed the Trout's really well.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I could come back to it.

    Any additional comments?

I felt that the previous novel, Medusa, was more intense read, but this is a good story. It just seems to take a while to develop. Abridged version might be better.

"Mr Cussler seems to get better and better!"
Would you consider the audio edition of Devil's Gate to be better than the print version?

The narrator is wonderful. He brings each character to life and uses his emotion to make you almost feel like you are watching a movie. You cannot find that in a book. Especially if you have poor eyesight, as I do, and must struggle to read normal sized print. But I prefer the audio books over even large print books, as long as the narrator knows what he or she is doing.

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favorite characters are Kurt Austin and Admiral Sandecker. Kurt is a real rough houser. and knows how to deal with the bad guys. He and his partner are quite humorous at times. I have a picture of Admiral Sandecker in my head, from the movie "Sahara" I think they cast the part very well. I like the Admiral because he always has his peoples backs.

Which character – as performed by Scott Brick – was your favorite?

He did an excellent job with all the characters. If I have to choose, I would say (I hope I have this name right) Joe Zavala.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If I could have, yes. However, it is quite long. It was compelling and full of action. It is a two part download and I am nearly finished with part two.

    Any additional comments?

No I think I have covered everything.

    "Truly enjoyed this book."

Here's another success story of Clive Cussler, his NUMA series books are great and this one is no exception. The story keeps you interested, the characters are well defined and the being done by Scott Brick adds the icing to the cake. You will not be disappointed I recommend this one to any who are a fan of the NUMA series and underwater adventures.
