Publisher's Summary

There once was a killer who knew the night, its secrets and rhythms. How to hide within its shadows. When to hunt. He roamed from town to town, city to city, choosing his prey for their beauty and innocence. His cruelties were infinite, his humanity long since forfeit. But still... he had not yet discovered how to make his special mark among monsters, how to come fully alive as Death. This is the story of how he learned those things, and of what we might do to ensure that he does not visit us.

"A story for dark nights and cocoa"

This is a typical Koontz book and I find them all a very good listening experience. This story did not hold many surprises for me as I could see where it would go but, despite the horror story itself, which was creepy, I did find it a relaxing listen and worth the effort.

Love speculative fiction so I am always watching for great sci-fi or fantasy. But since I'm a book addict, any good writing works for me - mystery, historical fiction, classics, even great kids' books. Tend to steer clear of YA and romance, but sample some here and there since you never know where great stories or authors may be hiding :)

"Not bad for a short story"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

If I had only listened to the story and done nothing else I wouldn't say this was time well spent because it wasn't a story that had much to say. But the story is moderately entertaining and a decent distraction while doing mundane chores.

Would you be willing to try another book from Dean Koontz? Why or why not?

I have read other Dean Koontz books and plan to read more. He wasn't as good in short story as the novels I've read but this one story didn't really change my mind about Dean Koontz either way. Don't base your sole opinion of the author on this story.

What about Steven Weber’s performance did you like?

Steven Weber did a pretty good

    Any additional comments?

This is a decent story for a short distraction but not as good as a Dean Koontz novel.

    Story
"I wanted to mow the neighbors yard"

The book is an hour and a half long and it takes about an hour to mow my yard. It made me want to go mow the neighbor's yard, instead I went inside, sat on the couch, drank a beer and finished it.

If you have read any of Koontz, with the exception of the Odd series, then this is exactly what you would expect from him. If you have not read Koontz, get out from under that rock and start here.

This is a bitter-sweet story, with a great main character who is a burn victim. I will not tell you how he got burned or how he deals with it, as that is a big part of the story. Just let me say I like how Koontz deals with it.

My favorite Dean Koontz books are: The Bad Place, Lightning, The Frankenstein series, Forever Odd, Phantoms, Dragon Tears, By the Light of the Moon and the very quirky book "Life Expectancy".

    "Nice very short Koontz"

This is a nice, but very short, Koontz. The characters are good if truncated. It ends very quickly with a moral that, although reasonable, was not really well supported by the story. The language is nice and blends darkness and light well. I really like Koontz so this was worth it to me. It was worth the sale price, but silly me I used a whole credit on it.

"Different, I was dissappointed book was to short."
What did you like best about Darkness Under the Sun? What did you like least?

I loved the fact that Howie had enough brains to figure out what was going on early in the game.

I hated that I spent my credit on a book that was so short. As Howie got older, it got a little lost.

Would you recommend Darkness Under the Sun to your friends? Why or why not?

Probably not, I was a little disappointed with it.

    Which scene was your favorite?

Didn't really have one this time around

Did Darkness Under the Sun inspire you to do anything?

Not really, just don't let your kids talk to strangers.

    Any additional comments?

Dean could have done a little better on this one.

"Always always a pleaser. Loved this reader!"
What did you love best about Darkness Under the Sun?

The crazy twist near the middle.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Darkness Under the Sun?

The voice of the narrator of the monster.

Which character – as performed by Steven Weber – was your favorite?

    The monster

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely, but since I know it would still be there, I was able to walk away from it at times.

But that's the chance you take with Koontz. One book captures you from beginning to end and then next can be sooooooo weird. This wasn't my favorite Koontz.
