Publisher's Summary

Murderers, mob bosses, and convicts . . . these guys are not your average neighbors. Unless you live on Alcatraz. It's 1935 and 12-year-old Moose Flanagan and his family have just moved to the infamous island that's home to criminals like notorious escapee Roy Gardner, Machine Gun Kelly, and of course, Al Capone. Now Moose has to try to fit in at his new school, avoid getting caught up in one of the warden's daughter's countless plots, and keep an eye on his sister Natalie, who's not like other kids.

All Moose wants to do is protect Natalie, live up to his parents' expectations, and stay out of trouble. But on Alcatraz, trouble is never very far away.

This is a very well written and interesting book. The main character is very likable. The narrator is easy to listen to. The sequel is great too.

"Not what I was expecting, but it was good"

When I first saw the title of this book, I assumed it was going to be funny or quirky. However, this book was more on the serious side. I still enjoyed it a lot! This is more of a coming of age novel than a humorous book. I love the way that they portrayed his sister's Autism and how realistic they were with the way it was viewed in that time period.
Reading this book has peeked my interest in the history of Alcatraz. Even though I knew that kids lived on the island, I never thought about their every day lives there.
The narrator is great! He brings the characters to life with the voices he uses. I definitely recommend this book.

"Wonderful Newberry Honor Book from 2007"

I would guess it was written for the 12-15 group, but I enjoyed every bit of it. Believable characters, situations and challenges, placed in an exciting location. Moose, the main character, carries a lot of responsibility for his sister with autism during the 1930's on Alcatraz Island. Interesting dynamics with family, friends, rules and situation would make for great classroom or family discussions.

"Al Capone can do my shirts anytime."
Would you listen to Al Capone Does My Shirts again? Why?

I would listen to this story again, even though it is a book written for young adults. Anyone who know an autistic person will find this story interesting and you find yourself routing for Moose and his sister.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Al Capone Does My Shirts?

One of the most memorable moments was when Moose was in charge of calming his sister down.

What about Kirby Heyborne’s performance did you like?

Kirby did a great job, and found his choice of voices very interesting.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. Although i didn't listen to it all at once, i found it hard to put it down and listened to it in 3 parts.

    Any additional comments?

I am planning on having my 10 year old son read the book.

This book came highly recommended. I personally had a hard time relating to a teenage boy. I listened to it, but it was just OK
