"Stories are well matched to their readers, who give personalities to the characters and maintain the tension of the plot." (AudioFile)
Computer Programmer and Worship Leader. Have enjoyed reading since my mom got me hooked on Nancy Drew and Agatha Christie prior to my teen years. My brother got me hooked on audio books after I started having a longer commute to work. Love a variety of genres.
"So - So"
This book was pretty mediocre. There were some good ones in here - such as "Diplomatic Constraints", "James Penney's New Identity'", "Disfigured" and "Empathy".
However, an equal number of the short stories are bland. And some, such as the "The Tuesday Club" and "The Powder Monkey" were so annoying, I skipped through most of them. And there is NOTHING in here that would keep you up at night.
If you're looking for something in this vein, "The Century's Best Suspense Stories" edited by Jeffery Deaver is MUCH better, even though the audiobook only has 1/2 of the stories as the real book. ("For Reasons Unknown", "The Weekenders" and "Quitter's Inc" from Deaver's collection are great stories and are much more likely to keep you up at night)
This may come down to an issue of taste, but I LOVE short stories and when you've read a good number of fantastic ones, you realize that no one can put together a book where every story thrills every reader. However, having said that, I would be hard pressed to believe that the stories in this book are the best that the editor could find.
"Not worth the time"
I agree with the other reviews - the stories are too short - I am just getting into the character and remembering who is who - and the story is over. I thought exposure to many different authors would be a great way to pick out the ones I liked - but the stories are even too short for that. Should have trusted the others who reviewed this before me :-)
"Very well done"
Great selection of stories from a wonderful group of authors. The narraraters were excellent also, brought to life all of the so many varied characters.Very well done indeed.
"Quite Disappointing"
This book did not live up to the reputation of the various authors. The stories were very short and seemed to just END about the time I was getting interested in the plot. The narrators were, on the whole, lacking, not adding to the pleasure of the experience.
"Just Horrible"
This was one of the two worst books I've listened to since I started with Audible.com about 8 years ago, and I've listened to a lot of books in that time. It was so bad I just gave up on it after about the 5th or 6th story. I'd finally lost all hope of hearing a good, or even mediocre, story.
"Some good, some not so good"
I liked this book because it introduced me to authors I do not usually read. Some were good, some not so much, the best part is each story is about 30 minutes so you get to just skip the couple that are plain bad.
"I hate that none of the stories are complete"
don't spend the credit, not worth it.
"misrepresented waste f time"
Complete stories instead of "samples".
It is not the characters but the incomplete stories. Sounds like a commercial to by more books. Total waste of time.
"never again"
I had a very hard time understanding what the stories are about, even though I speak and read English every day. I gave up after 1 hour and I never buy something like this again.
"Good Listen; something for everyone...."
I liked some of these stories alot.. some not so much but, it was entertaining.
