"Another good story by one of the great SF authors"
This is juvenile science fiction but makes a fun read for adults also. A chance to visit Mars as we wish it could be. Even with all we know about Mars today which makes this story more fantasy that it used to be the author still can carry you along with the story. He uses his ability to create realistic characters and place them in fictional backgrounds and then tell great stories in the world he has created.
"fun read"
I enjoyed this story so much I listened to it in one day. Definitely a keeper!
"Never Get Tired of This one"
I have read this a good 10 times in my life since Junior HS. Back then it was hardbacks from the school library, then it was paperbacks I would read until they fell apart in my hands. And Now its audio, and still the same good stuff.
"Mars comes to life!"
It rates high in my liking of Heinline's fiction works!
Willis and how he became the bridge between two worlds.
As always he puts so much feeling into each personality that you can forget its only one person reading!
Mars comes alive with two different peoples that are bridged by the youth of both civilizations.
Heinline makes fiction so real!
"One of Heinlein's Best"
I grew up on Heinlein and this has always been one of my favorites. The characters are well drawn and the character of Willis is delightful. A nice, engaging story and well-performed. I particularly enjoyed the dialogue between the two boys.
I definitely recommend it.
"As Usual for Heinlein, Fun and Whacky"
I loved this story and the audio was well read. The story line is so "50's Sci-Fi" in its lack of excessive descriptions of gore and ugly monsters that a reader can actually enjoy the story on its own merits. A great story for people of all ages to enjoy -- fun enough for the little kids, campy enough for the MTV bracket and plain good entertainment for anything older than that...I recommend this audio book.
"great for young readers"
Heinlein put out great science fiction stories for young readers and this is one of them. I introduced my 13 year old son to his work a few years ago and now whenever we go on a road trip I get him anew one to listen too and enjoy. That his mother and I enjoy the listen just as much is a bonus.
"This is a performance..."
When you purchase this audiobook keep it in mind that this is a performance done by several voice actors. Audible.com offers several Robert Heinlein audiobooks that are performed by the same production company. "The Star Beast", "Have Spacesuit Will Travel", and a couple of others are available as performances. These are mostly his juvenile fiction books. These are kid books, suitable for children, and they are all very enjoyable. But know what you are buying. If you want sci-fi with a little bit harder edge these may not be what you want. For a light space jaunt, to keep your kids quiet on a road trip these are perfect.
"Great, but it's abridged"
Yes.
This was a great story, but my son reads along with the recordings and parts of the book were left out of the recording. At first I though he was just losing his place, but when I checked it myself, where were whole parts of the book missing from the recording. Basically, it's abridged. It's a shame because he was really enjoying it. Think they should note on the listing that it's abridged.
"Not Good"
I realized that this was kid fiction when I purchased it. I did not realize that it was going to have such over-the-top dramatic reading by a cast of readers who were not good. Since narration is subjective to the listenner, I would recommend listening to the sample before purchase. I tried for about an hour and gave up. It is too bad too since I really enjoy Heilein's kid fiction and the non-traditional concepts he puts across.
