Publisher's Summary

"He is no fool who gives up what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose." So wrote Jim Elliot at age 22, sweating over Greek roots and patristics at Wheaton College. "Seven years later," writes his widow Elisabeth, "he and four other young men...sat together on a strip of white sand on the Curaray River, deep in Ecuador's rain forest, waiting for the arrival of a group of men whom they loved, but had never met, savage Stone Age killers, men now known to all the world as Aucas."

The circumstances of the death of these men are by now known throughout the world in one of the great missionary adventure stories of modern times. But this is the first account of the whole life of one of them, a life that, though "hid with Christ in God", was in part revealed in some of the most poignant and moving spiritual writings of our time. Shadow of the Almighty is a tremendous biography of an adventurous and inspirational life.

    "Read by the Author?"

This is the first review I've taken the time to write (and I've loved tons of the books from Audible). I hesitate to listen to books read by the author. They are often not the quality of a professional and I tend to think infused with a touch of arrogance. This is far from the case with this book. Elizabeth Elliot is obviously not a professional reader. This story is better understood because of it. Elizabeth has a matter of fact tone, pauses to find her place, a audible breath here and there and the occasional sound of a page turning. She enhances the story. Jim Elliot did not pride himself in presenting perfection before an audience of men and women. He strove after the heart of God with his entire being and was not concerned if those around him thought less of him. It is my opinion that this book could be read by no one more perfectly than the one Jim would have chosen to read it. Her imperfection as a reader was a constant reminder of how God does not need perfectly polished people to accomplish His plan. This was an enjoyable and challenging book.
