"fun"
The Spiderwick Chronicles are a fun series, aimed for the younger set but not in such a way that older listeners will be put off (no wishing for sudden deafness here!). I would recommend buying volumes one and two and "The Wrath of Mulgarath" at the same time and listening to them in all together. Otherwise it has the feeling of a serial instead of a finished story.

"Skips the story? Not appropriate for younger kids?"
This volume does not pick up where Vol. 1 left off. There seems to be a whole story missing, even though Vol. 1 has books 1 and 2. This story is also much darker than the first volume. My 6 year old loves scary stories, but this is too dark for her, definitely. Had to remove it from her playlist. Also, one of the child characters, Marissa, portrays snotty, bratty, jaded behavior that my 6 year old decided to mimic - parents beware! I would advise that parents listen to this prior to giving it to younger children and make your own decision on whether it is appropriate for your child. (Which I should have done myself! Ooops!)

"Not Quite the Same as the Film"
I had to listen to this book to see how it compared to the film. Indeed, if you have seen the movie then by all means get the book. Because several key things have been changed. Well written and well narrated.

We have a long commute to school and this book got my kids in the car every day without me having to ask even once!

"Not much happens"
Not much happens and overall humdrum. If you are looking for fantasy or adventure, there are so many better choices. A few I would recommend are Journey Beyond the Beyond and Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches. Then continue on to In the Service of Dragons and Chronicles of Narnia.
