Deep South

I really like books that transport you to their setting. I felt like I had spent quite a few hours in sweaty Mississippi by the time I had finished this book. Really good writing on the critical scenes where she is attacked ( I don’t think that is giving much away). Anna is an intriguing character and she has a lot to learn as a manager which is very entertaining.

The down side is that I did not really feel convinced by the motive of the villain and the final resolution of the plot but I enjoyed the journey and didn’t feel to let down by the weakish ending on the whodunit front because Anna’s personal story is more interesting and leads somewhere more credible.

I am looking forward to the next one but how I wish Audible made the sequence of a series a bit clearer.

I like the Nevada Barr series. They are easy listening and don't compare to Michael Connelly or John Sandford, but if you know this, you don't expect the same level of plot and characters. Unfortunately this book is set in the south and since I am a recent transplant to the south, unfortunately I find it fairly accurate. What really bothered me, though, was the narrator's constant swallowing and breath intakes. It sounded like her throat was very dry and she needed water. It was distracting, especially the swallowing which bordered on grossness. It was an effort to continue to listen to the book to the finish. I will certainly sample the audio of any books Rosenblat narrates before purchasing.

wow... I just started reading these books by nevada barr, And I started with hard truth. I know that isn't the order there written, But whats so cool about this series is they all have A life of there own and it doesn't matter. The hard truth was a very good read, But this one hit home being in the south not to mention the natchez trace.
The best story In my opinion I ever read. Don't pass this one up you will miss out...

I enjoyed the story, but don't think I would buy another with the same narrator she was constantly making swallowing noises. This is the first I have been annoyed with a narrator and I am not new to listening, I have listened to over 50 books.

Wonderful series - start with the first book and you will want to buy the whole series. A female park ranger with hands full of murder and mayhem. Anna Piegon - loves, ages, and grows through the series.
The description of nature settings, both serene and violent, transports the reader to a new and throughly enjoyable arm chair adventure. And will make you wish you didn't live in the city and have such a boring job! Just relax and get lost in the tale!

Although Ms. Rosenblatt is an exceptional narrator, she could not do much with this trite and predictable narrative. As this novel was rated as the best in this series by Nevada Barr, I will not be downloading the others.

This is a great author. I love her work. It is fun trying figure out the crimes alongside her!

This was my first Nevada Barr mystery. I may give her one more chance, but I was not overly impressed with this one. Most of the characters were walking sterotypes. Big fat stupid white lawman. Big fat heart'o' gold African American lawman. Completely crazy southern white racists. Savvy and wise 16 year old African American teenage girl. Foul mouthed young black football star who appears to seriously disrespect women. The really hot and available Sheriff is just too typical. It goes on, I won't even mention what's up with the Southern Baptist minister. I have to take issue too with Annas treatment of her dog. I won't give out any real spoilers, but I have to wonder if Ms. Barr has ever had a dog, and worry if she has. It was also my first listen to this narrator. While I think she is really pretty good, I could hear her intake of breath before every sentence. At times, especially when listening on headphones, it became distracting. Instead listening to the story, I found myself listening for that next intake of breath.

This is another of the Anna Pigeon books and it's intriguing and suspenseful, just like the others Nevada Barr has written. Am working to collect all of her books and so far I've gotten the ones offered By Audible. I anxiously await any of her new books they offer. Easy to listen to and so full of historical facts--I love these books!

I always enjoy a good mystery. This was good but it seemed a bit on the . . . .
Well, I am not sexist but I think women would more identify with this novel. It really was enjoyable from a male perspective but I know my wife will enjoy it more.
