Publisher's Summary

By New York Times best-selling author Bob Mayer, writing as Robert Doherty (author of the best-selling Area 51 series)

What if the Shadow that destroyed Atlantis 10,000 years ago, comes back to threaten our present world? A war beyond time. An enemy beyond space. A thriller beyond your wildest dreams.... Three areas on the Earth's surface defy explanation: the Bermuda Triangle, the Devil's Sea of Japan, and a small region of Cambodia. Inside these realms, planes have disappeared, ships have vanished, and, in Cambodia, an entire civilization has been lost, leaving behind Angkor Wat.

In 1628 BC, a volcano erupts, one that would become legend as the eruption that destroyed Minoan Civilization. But a small group of priestesses stand fast against the dark Shadow that precipitated the destruction.

In AD 79, the oracle of Delphi must join forces with the most fearsome gladiator from the arena of Pompeii to fight the Shadow that destroys Vesuvius. And the XV Legion is sent on a quest that causes it to disappear from the Roman Empire and into the fog of history.

In 1937, Amelia Earhart is on the most dangerous leg of her 'round-the-world flight, near the Devil's Sea. A dark Shadow rises in front of her and swallows her and her plane, never to be seen again. Until the present, when Eric Dane leads his team against the Shadow threatening our present world and unites with her.

In 1986, the Shadow appears inside of Chernobyl, sucking power from the reactors and causing disaster. And in the present, a Ring of Fire around the planet ignites, threatening the entire world.

Former Green Beret Eric Dane and the mysterious Sin Fen, a woman with powers he can't quite understand, must track the mystical crystal skulls that have baffled scientists, to use them as a weapon against the Shadow, and unite with the gladiator and oracle to make a last stand for mankind.

If you enjoyed Lost, you'll love this book and be amazed at the similarities in concept (although this book was published before Lost).

"I didn't think the narration could get worse"

I honestly didn't think the narration could get worse after Hayes, I was wrong. Gollery is simply terrible. He's obviously isn't reading ahead prior to the recording. This is evident by constant attempts to retry sentences. His staccato pronunciation of words is irritating beyond belief. It's actually making me want to fast forward at times.

Again, this is merely detracting from a BRILLIANT work by Mayer. It is a testament to his gripping writing that I am pushing through this narration to learn more of the fight against the Shadow.

I can't tell you how much I am looking forward to Jeffrey Kafer in the final three in the series. Such a great narrator.

    "OK story, AWEFUL performance"
Would you try another book from Bob Mayer and Robert Doherty and/or Martin Gollery?

Martin Gollery should NEVER narrate, ever. How the heck did the robot voice from the answering machines from the '90 get the longest book in the series?

Would you be willing to try another book from Bob Mayer and Robert Doherty ? Why or why not?

I like the story line, I really do. I don't like Mayer's tendency to explain away God and religion. I would say this is the most frustrating thing about all his stories. That being said, it is otherwise a good story. So, yes.

What didn’t you like about Martin Gollery’s performance?

All of it. He is a terrible narrator, the worst I have ever heard.

"Where do you find these people?!"
Would you try another book from Bob Mayer and Robert Doherty and/or Martin Gollery?

    yes

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Dane

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Very choppy. Intensity was misapplied at times. Characters were indistinct. Also, technology now allows for editing a recording - why did no one do this? Pronunciation should be researched as well.

Did Atlantis: Devil's Sea inspire you to do anything?

Yes - consider a career as a narrator for Audible!

    Any additional comments?

My previous experiences with Audible have been excellent. This series has, so far, been very disappointing.

    "What happened??"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The narrator of the first 2 books was hit or miss, but this person was just horrible - very mono-tone.

There are also errors in the speaking where the narrator corrects himself. Why would these not be edited out?

Same as in book 2, there are so many specifics already introduced in the first two books I found myself fast forwarding to get to something new.

What other book might you compare Atlantis: Devil's Sea to and why?

    None

How could the performance have been better?

Narrated by someone that could very their voice and less repeats in details already mentioned in the first two books.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Disappointment in the Series

    Any additional comments?

Just that I hope the next book is not put together this poorly.
