Pimp: The Story of My Life

I gave it the old college try, but just could not get into it. The slang that he used was just to much. I got tired of rewinding the story and just gave up. I truly felt like I had to learn Pimp English just to get through this story. Maybe I will try again one day. But for now I rather stick to books written today and not in Slim's hay day.

The raw, and blatant honesty.

My favorite character was Iceberg Slim. The reason is that I love the fact that he did not try to display himself as some kind of godlike figure, with this being an autobiography about his life. Instead he explained everything about his life, from child to middle-aged Man. From a non-pimp adolescent to a retired middle-aged Pimp. The good, the bad and the "extremely ugly." And from there he let the reading hear, feel, and interpret his story, as they so choose. Autobiographies like this are without a doubt "The most interesting."

I did not have an extreme emotional reaction, but I did have an extreme intellectual reaction. But seeing the ugliness of one man's horrors and mistakes in full detail, has help me mentally check my own deficiencies.

He does the characters very well! he never bores me or cause me to lose intrest

The beginning when he mentioned his own trama at the age age of three years old. I have heard lots of stories but this takes the cake on child abuse.

Understanding the slang in the book is a bit hard to grasp at first, but the story is so good, you get it after a while.

Although I know it makes the story, I found the language a little raunchy. I would try to tone it down a little, but I think that might take away from the story. Guess I am caught in a quandry.

For me, the Pimp's first trip to jail was memorable because I put myself in his mother's place and could feel her pain.

Added to the story because of the inflections and change of dpeed when he was attempting to make the picture more vivid.

I could see this being made into a movie, but only if the Reynolds brothers produced it. I feel that Spike would try to make it a historical piece and Tyler would attempt to make it funny. It is historical, but I don't think Spike would be able to allow the use of the language which was used in the book. Without a doubt Edris Elba should be the Pimp.

Better and deeper as I went. Excellent narration. Simple writing style (a little more noun-verb, noun-verb than usual) worked well. Allowed my brain to "predict" and comprehend easily, yet nouns and verbs themselves sparkled, so there was surprise and delight as I learned a new dialect of street language. Characters drawn quickly and clearly. Story dynamics easy to follow. I was able to devote attention to both. One "tension" passage probably the best I've read. Well done. Kiwis for EVERYone!

This is a Urban readers paradise. It tells it straight forward and as the actual character would view the situation. Very raw and paints vivid pictures.

The Hardcore, Urban feel

He gives the emotion, feeling and the anger that you may not get from reading.

This is one of the best books that I've listened to.

The thing that I noticed first was the cyclical trend that was developing throughout the story of good people being taking advantage of, becoming jaded and then reversing the strategy on the next person. It was also very interesting the hear about the philosophy/psychology of pimping how predictable the outcome would be. It really make you think about how the many tenets of pimping can be seen in a variety of present day relationships, whether business, personal, or otherwise and how easily one can fall for the "Georgia" if one isn't careful.
