After a political scandal, fledgling lobbyist Dempsey Jo Killebrew is left almost broke, unemployed, and homeless. She reluctantly accepts to refurbish Birdsong, the old family place in Guthrie, Georgia. But, oh, is Dempsey in for a surprise. "Bird Droppings" would more aptly describe the moldering Pepto Bismol - pink dump. There's also a murderously grumpy old lady who has claimed squatter's rights and isn't moving out. Ever.
Furthermore, everyone in Guthrie seems to know Dempsey's business, from a smooth-talking real-estate agent to a cute former lawyer who owns the local newspaper. It wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the pesky FBI agents who show up on Dempsey's doorstep, hoping to pry information about her ex-boss from her. All Dempsey can do is roll up her sleeves and get to work. And before long, what started as a job of necessity somehow becomes a labor of love and, ultimately, a journey that takes her to a place she never expected - back home again.

"Enjoyable Listening"
Come on fellow readers! These books aren't read because they are literary masterpieces! They are just an enjoyable escape. This is my first MK Andrews book. If the others are equal to this I will defintely try another. I enjoyed the characters and the narrator did a great job. I liked that the author didn't over kill the plot. Yes, it was very predictable. Personally, I didn't care. I love chick lit! It's light and funny... a retreat from daily life.
"Another treat from M.K. Andrews"
Hilarious! Maybe more so because I was raised in central Georgia. Ms. Andrews always delivers light, fun stories with lots of true-to-life characters that make you laugh. Her characters are people that we all have known somewhere, sometime in our own pasts. Another good summer read.
"GREAT BOOK"
I LOVE THIS BOOK. THIS WILL BE ONE I LISTEN TO OVER AGAIN. IS LITE EASY LISTENING. GOOD CHARACTOR INTERACTION. MAYBE RIGHT BOOK RIGHT TIME BUT, WELL WORTH THE MONEY AND TIME. HAVE TOLD SEVERAL OF MY BOOK BUDDIES ABOUT IT. LOVE ELLA KATE AND SHORTY.
"Mary Kay Andrews never disappoints!"
She has a true talent for portraying modern Southern life...I throughly enjoyed getting to know Dempsey Killebrew...great performance too!
"Great story"
This was a great listen. The narrator was especially talented, between the accents and voices. The characters were interesting also, but I was waiting for the epilogue, but it wasn't there. I would have liked to hear the wrap up on the other characters.
"unexpectedly charming"
charming, heartwarming, funny
I have not listened to any of her other performances but will add her to my list.
It is an easy listen, lighthearted story
"Predictable, but with a twist"
Ok, so the formula isn't necessarily anything new, but let's face it "If it aint broke don't fix it". Having said that, I enjoyed this book. All the stuff going on in our heroine's life was enough of an added twist to be a wonderful accompionment to the predictability of the plot. I loved the mother character. We've ALL had these kind of moments with Mom! Plus the extra "small town" characters are really nice too, and add to the richness of the story. I would definitely recommend this book for a fun, feel good listen.
"Just fun!"
Listened to this book over the last couple of days and it was a light, fun story. It really hit home because I listened while I was fixing up my family home for new tenants. Don't expect to tax your brain -- this is just what I needed to keep my mind distracted from the tedious chores at hand.
"Wonderful!"
This is my first read by Ms. Andrews, I was captured the in the first five mins. of her book. I could imagine that I was right there in Guthier, GA. I listen on my way to and from work. This is my destressing time. I have found that my driving is calmer, when I arrive home I am not as tense.
"Fun, complex story"
This was a great book. At first I thought I wouldn't like it but unlike other books in this genre, it had several complex storylines and brilliant characters. The narrator did an amazing job, particularly with all the Southern accents. I really enjoyed listening to this book.
