The Langoliers: One Past Midnight

And I do, you'll probably like this audio. I enjoyed Langoliers the first time I read it and have gone back to it from time to time over the years. Yes, I know it has some gaping holes in its story logic, but I still like the story. Go figure. Defoe's narration is also pretty good, with the exception of one character. However, it's not one of the main characters so it was only mildly irritating. My main criticism of the audio is the use of "mood music." I don't need music to build my sense of suspense. King does a good job of that with his story telling, and Defoe adds to that suspense with his performance. Unlike Bag of Bones, where the music at least relates to the story, the music here is like the score of a TV show and somewhat intrusive. Still, I'll keep it on my Ipod and listen to it again from time to time.

Love the story, classic Stephen King. It's one of those stories that you can listen to over and over and find different gems each time. Although I find William Defoe a wonderful narrater, personally I find his character voices a bit irritating. The women sound quite nasal and whiney and poor Nick spends a lot of time sounding like Cary Grant. The music is not overly used so it's not too hard to live with. Overall quite enjoyable!

One of Stephen King's best. Unfortunately, the fantastic film actor Willem Dafoe doesn't narrate well. He has a voice that's more suited for a noir-ish novel (very 1930s private eye), and I found his voice for the teenage girl distracting -- sounded like an old lady. Plus, the recording sounds like it was done in a closet using a Mickey Mouse telephone. The only thing that kept me listening was Stephen King: great plot, 3-D characters and top-notch writing.

The story might be ok... I don't know. The narrator was too distracting. I've seen him in plenty of movies and never felt too strongly one way or another about him, but he should stay away from narrating fiction. The voices really sounded like he was trying to make fun of the characters.

Good story, interesting concept though it has been done over and over thanks to Rod Sterling and his thought provoking show. Its a story that keeps you waiting and wondering but the sound quality is awful. Maybe its just me, but I can't hardly even stand it. I download on enhanced but the sound is rotten. If I turn it up high it distorts. If I turn it down I can hardly hear it. I have never had a Audible file like this before. I am assumming its just the audio book and in that case it sucks.

Suspenseful

as a truck driver i must say willem dafoe is REALLY bad at reading this was hard to hear half of what he was reading he is TOO "soft" at a lot of points in the story. i had the volume all the way up and still could not hear him, i understand i am in a loud truck but never had this prob with any other stephen king books. willem was a bad choice.

Stephen king has never let me down. Some complain about the amount of detail, but that is really what brings it into focus. The depth of the story is not common with any other writer and that's what brings me back.

This is one of my favorite King stories. I love it, not sure why. The descritpions are great, the characters interesting and the theme truly unique. One of the most individual and creative settings I've ever read.

However, the narrator seriously ruins it for me. The more I listen to it, the more anoyed I get. Other reviews seem have no problem with the performance, and I can't honestly guess why. The narrator reads all the women, especially the children in such a nasal tone . . . he makes all the woman sound like nasal, stuffed up, prissy, stuck up snobs, somewhere between stoned and allergy attack. It drives me crazy. It has ruined an otherwise marvelous story . . .

The first time I read this story I couldn't put it down, I read it in one night. Unfortunately the audio book, much like the made for TV movie was dissapointing. The music was annoying as were many of the narrator's voices. Still I gave it 4 starts because it's such a well written story by King and worth a listen .
