trying to see the world with my ears
"very satisfying mystery"
If you've read other James mysteries, you know to expect a gripping atmopheric tale, well told, slowly unwinding. I regret to learn that she wrote only two mysteries featuring Grey as a central character. Although the young detective makes a couple of really stupid moves, James makes her still credible and I would like to listen as Cordelia developed her skills in later novels.
I hestitated to download this because I like James' more recent mysteries as one type of listen, and her early ones because they come across more as period pieces -- I wasn't sure about a novel circa 80s, but it followed the lines of a classic mystery - and given its rarified setting highlighting Brit class differences, it could have been set earlier in the 20th century. The slightly "older" sound of the recording added to the period feel. Some listeners may find the latter a fault in the listen.
