Snow

I needed a departure - I had this book on my wish list for a while and finally listened to it. The story is fast and so it kept me listening to it all the way to the end - the narration is very good, and that does a lot for this story. I would put it on the level of a 1950's sci fi movie, which can be a good time. I want to ding this story for some reason but the truth is I was kept entertained by it and in the end that is what it was written to do. It may be a little cheesy but that does not kill it, go ahead, if this is your genre then it will probably be a story you will enjoy.

Good story.

This book was really good. The only problem I had is it left some of the mysteries unsolved. Such as what was the deal with the children and what happened to them? Its not a big part of the story so no spoilers but I just wanted that wrapped up. Very good story and didn't take long for things to start going bad for our heroes.

This was a pretty good horror story by Malfi. It's a monster type of story that deals with some weird beings that come out of the snow and take over people like in Invasion of the Body Snatchers. It follows the story of a couple of people who happen to break down in their car while traveling in the snow and then happen upon a town in crisis. It was a fun read it had a zombie story combined with Invasion of the Body Snatchers vibe to it. One missed chance I thought was the protagonist (Todd) was determined to get to his son by Christmas, but any references to that meeting were was pretty much ignored in the middle of the story, so the emotional impact that could of had driven the main character Todd was lost. Other than that minor gripe this was one of the more enjoyable stories by Malfi I've read. Don't expect some moral lesson or higher level of meaning in these pages, just expect a fun classic horror story, because that's what you get.

Of note the voice actor did a decent job. Unfortunately he does not have multiple voices, so if you are getting a first person account from a male or female character in the story he reads from the same voice, but he is very easy to understand and reads clear, so while he could have been better I really had no complaint because he was easy to hear and follow.

If you want a fun monster style horror story you'll get it with this audio book.

This audio book is very well read. Love the narrator. The story starts out interesting enough but once the main characters are stranded in the town with these creatures that take over their bodies it goes on and on and on and becomes not believable and too fakely dramatic. Didn't enjoy ending as much as beginning.

This book does have B-movie type dialog, which comes off feeling extra strange when the cussing and graphic depictions begin. However, the biggest detraction is actually the narrator. The lack of believability. Seriously - leaving O'hare in a blizzard and two hours later finding yourself on a deserted road in the middle of nowhere? In two hours you'd still be in the suburbs...suburbs that are not far from the airport and certainly not in the country. And then all of a sudden it's freezing cold and the stars are out?

Jeff Pringle, with his Country Bears voice, was the wrong reader for this horror story. It was like listening to Santa Claus read Lovecraft - a complete mismatch.

The story wasn't bad, though it brought to mind the plot for "Chubby Rain," the movie being made in the movie Bowfinger. Perhaps it wouldn't have if the reader had been Phil Gigante or Bronson Pinchot, someone who could have made the terror terrorizing. Still, a fair effort from Malfi at a SciFi/Horror mashup.
