Years ago, a young woman was beaten and raped while onlookers did nothing. Now those witnesses are becoming victims themselves.
Baltimore Homicide Detective J. D. Fitzpatrick has seen a lot of horrific violence, both as a cop and during his deployment in Afghanistan, but nothing like the trail of tortured bodies that are turning up throughout the city. He’s up against a brutal killer with a very personal vendetta, and now J. D. is beginning to suspect that his medical examiner may be shielding some crucial evidence linked to the case.
Assigned to the murder victims, forensic pathologist Dr. Lucy Trask is intrigued by J. D.’s compassion, but she isn’t about to mix work with pleasure. Not while there’s a ruthless killer on the loose. And definitely not while she’s keeping a dark secret that could connect her to these vicious killings—and put her next on the hit list.

“Rose doesn’t allow her luxurious characterizations to get in the way of a wicked good plot that grabs hold and maintains tension from beginning to end.” (Publishers Weekly)
"Not the right narrator"
I really enjoy Karen Rose's books, and so far this one is no exception, but this is just NOT the right narrator for the book. I've enjoyed Ms. Gavin's narration in The Hollows series (among others), but her voice is driving me crazy with this one. It sounds like she's lisping and some of the accents are terrible... things that I haven't noticed before. Whatever she's changed, she needs to quit and change back.
"I may have to buy the book"
I am a huge fan of Karen Rose's books, the audio productions in particular. I am about 2 hours into this one and I am tempted to go to the book store and buy the book to read instead. The story line is already very good very typical Karen Rose, however, the narrator is terrible. Hard to understand and her fake southern accents are like nails on a chalkboard. Very distracting to the storyline.
"Interest story...if you can stand to listen"
It's okay
She sounds like she has been on a drinking binge or she has had a stroke...it's horrible to listen too! Worst narrator I have ever heard!
Nooo...I liked the story...just could stand the narrator. I felt like I needed to offer her coffee to sober up.
"Good story -- Horrible narrator!!"
I almost stopped listening after about 30 minutes, but since I love all of Karen Rose's books, I soldiered on. The lisping narrator was so annoying! I'm not sure if it's a speech impediment or if she is lisping on purpose for some unknown reason that only she can answer. Whatever the case, it almost ruined the book for me -- almost. I agree with a previous reviewer, buying the book was an idea I had as well. If not for the narration I would have given it 5 stars.
"Narration ruined story"
I am not sure if I will be able to make it through the story with this narrator. The book is otherwise ok, although this is my 2nd or 3rd Karen Rose book and the characters' are very predictable.
"Suspenseful"
This book kept me on the edge of my seat ... until the very end and then only because the author found it necessary to "tidy up" ... Characters are good and the reader was excellent. Highly recommended, even though I have been disappointed in other offerings by this author.
"Romantic Crime"
Performance was good, story also good.
Finding the murders
Yes, she read very well, performance was with feeling.
No, but not because I didn't want to, it was because I have to work so I can have more money to buy more books.....
"Awful narration."
Different narrator. Maybe it would have been better if the narration was better.
Hunger Games
Absolutely not. She is really bad. Not everyone is meant to do this, she definately isnt. I listen to lots of audible books and this is the worst.
I just couldn"t get past the bad narration.
"Good story, poor narrator"
This is a well crafted story - kept me listening even though the narrator added nothing to the story. Her lisp was very hard to listen to.
"classic Karen Rose"
Yes, to get the plot nuances
The characters, except at the end when the heroine did a TSTL moment
No. This listen was a wonderful treat. I will definitely listen to more!
Not quite long enough of a drive
great use of my credit
