When I drive, I read... uhm listen. I like SciFi, Fantasy, some Detective and Espionage novels and Religion. Now and then I will also listen to something else.
"Fantasy with flare"
In this Discworld novel, Ankh-Morpork's Night Watch is introduced under the leadership of Captain Sam Vimes (later Commander, Sir etc.) Pratchett evolves the Watch from a group of drunkards (with Vimes as the biggest drunkard) to a respectable police force which protects and serves the community of Ankh-Morpork.
When reading this/listening to this book, you will be introduced to Sgt Fred Colon and Corporal Nobby Nobbes, that element of the any police force that you actually wish weren't there. However, Pratchett warms the reader/ listener so much to these characters, that you realise that you need to take the bad with the good... like the patrician, the ruler of Ankh-Morpork, Lord Vetinari, tells Vimes straight after all the havoc in the city has quieted down.
You will also meet Lance Constable Carrot Ironfounderson, a human who thinks he's a dwarf, a dragon and the fat lady!
Probably the best Discworld novel, after Feet of Clay. Nigel Planer's performance is commendable en highly enjoyable. A MUST!
"Best narrator I know"
Nigel Planer is amazing! The voices you will hear are the same you've imagined in your head, when reading paper book. I enjoy Pratchett again, but this time on the street, in subway, everywhere.
It is Pratchett, so ..... everything.
The real authentic voices.
"Great read"
Not better just different. I listen to audio books as I drive, something I would not reccomend with a print version
Sam Vimes, I just love his cynical honest view of the human condition
The prison scene with Vetinari and the rats
The audio quality in several sections of the book was poor. There was a low hum of background conversation that was both annoying and distracting.
"The best narration so far in this series"
Yes. Terry Pratchett is brilliant, as usual. And this is the best narration by Nigel Planer so far in this series - I love the voices he has used for the characters.
"A great start"
The book that introduced Captain Sam Vimes may not be the best in the series of Discworld novels that feature him, but it's a solid starting point for the various unique characters of the Night Watch. Indeed, rock bottom is by far the best point to start off the journey of a band of unlikely heroes.
A marvelous book written in a magnificent and unique world, splendidly brought to life by Nigel Planer, who voices each character so well you'd have to constantly remind yourself it's all done by one person, Guards! Guards! is the worth every minute and every penny you spend on it.
