Death of a Valentine: A Hamish Macbeth Mystery

Usual good story, great characters and good performance make this a solid listen. If you like an easy listening mystery with a non-traditional detective - this is for you.

I have enjoyed Hamish MacBeth for a long time now. This misadventure is as entertaining as the others.

I truly enjoy M.C. Beaton's Hamish MacBeth series. I've read all of them over and over and this was my first audio book and it was delightfully done.

This book feels like a second-rate children's novel, both in writing quality and in characterization. The writing is just so painfully simple that it almost sounds as if you should be listening to a 'See Spot Run' story, only with slightly more adult storylines. I say slightly more adult because the characters are such flat, cardboard cutouts of people that they seem more like dolls being marionetted through the story than anything else. Actually, I want to expand what I said above. Everything about this book is painfully simple, and it's painful to listen to it. Don't waste your time.

Light and enjoyable. I will be listening to more M.C. Beaton. I also enjoyed Graeme Malcolm's reading.

Much as I love reading Agatha Raisin novels, I will always consider Hamish Macbeth my first love. These are the coziest of the cozy mysteries.

This latest installment has Hamish nearly trapped into marriage and you almost felt that the murder mystery was a subplot. The characters are such fun and I always look forward to Hamish's latest installment. Another fun thing is some of the situations that crop up and how Hamish finds his away around them.

The narration on this book is so annoying I could hardly stand it. The writing is very "first grade" quality. I have read a number of M. C. Beaton books and keep hoping they will get better, but hope doesn't change the fact that they are just plain amateur. I wouldn't recommend this book at all.

I'm a big fan of the Hamish Macbeth series, and this installment didn't let me down. Like the other books in this series, the mystery is solid, the characters are colorful and there are a few laughs to round things out. I flew through the book, so that's usually an indicator to me that it was a pretty good book. I'd definitely say to give it a try!
